Thinking about getting an eclipse

hey, i've been thinking about getting an eclipse for a while now and figured i would ask this here before i started to test drive and crunch numbers. are there any known models that i should probably stay away from. i'm leaning towards a 01 or 02 gt. i wanted a spyder, but i think they would be too much, so i'll settle for a gt with a moonroof. ;-) .
thanks in advance and please feel free to leave any other information that may help me in figuring out what to buy.

The 3G Eclipse is perfect if you want a slow good looking car. Depending on what you will be using this car for it can be a great car, or a POS. Give us some more info on what its main purpose will be.

get a 2000 Eclipse GT the newer years have less horsepower stock for stock
that or definitely get a turbo DSM w/ AWD

well you know, i want a car i make look good (wheels, maybe body kit, maybe some tv's or something) just show off look good stuff, but i also want a car i can tune a little and make it go when i hit the gas. i'm not lookin for a 9 second car or anything. i was more looking along hte lines of mechanical or electrical problems with the 3rd generation eclipses, thanks

well then defintely get a 2g GSX, because the 3g's are a little rough to tune and make go, a GSX will give you good response wet or dry, they look awesome (IMO) stock 17's and as long as it doesn't look like the fast and the furious, i think you could make it an awesome car... however pulling the backseat in favor of a sound system would be a better venture than leaving it back there

Man look at the 2 door stratus. The 3G eclipse and the stratus share so many lines. Looking at them side by side its hard to tell the difference. But after all it is our sister car.

i would suggest the 1997 Eclipse GSX because the insurance (from what i've heard) is a good deal cheaper on it than on the 1998
and my neighbor pulled a 1998 w/ 20k miles on it last year so there are some out there, you just have to take your time finding them because it definitely won't be easy or necessarily cheap

best bet would be a 1G gsx. cheap, freakin fast, and loads of aftermarket parts. the styling is bit iffy tough, but with the money you saved over a '97 2G, you can get performance parts or your stereo and tv's, which in my opinion (which doesnt matter) is useless. "bling" is for for dudes that have no game. they cant talk to chicks, so they put tv's and 20 inch rims on thier cars to get attention. and another thing- altezza lights, giant wings, and loud trash can exhausts are NOT cool. if you disagree with the last line, you belong in the ricerhonda forum.

Man the 1st gen's have the best of all the worlds. Best styling, best cam's, and strong aftermarket support. God I cant wait till July. Bye Bye 3G, hello 1st gen TSI AWD!!

what kind of modding are you thinking of?
simple intake and exhaust or do you wanna get big gains from it like 50hp and up?
if your just thinking small mods then the 3g eclipse isnt a bad idea. there nice smooth running cars. i dont think you will have any dissapointments with it.
and actually mid 15's isn't bad at all, and you put a little money in to it and you can probably get some low 15's out of it with not much money at all.

mid 15's!? c'mon man! and for the cost to horsepower ratio the eclipse is awful! mitsubishi builds thier engines up and detunes them for the market. the head, intake, exhaust etc. is as good as its going to get. engine wise, anything short of a turbo is a waste of money. exhaust and intakes dont do anything for the car other than making it annoyingly loud. to make the 3G fast, you have to shell out some clams. the first mod to a 3G should be the rotors and SS lines.
and i really love the chassis stiffining kit from DThree.
this thread has really drifted off from the original question......

oh, so intake doesn't add hp in these cars? niether does opening the exhaust ha?
the point is disckswhip, if he isn't concerned about speed, as much as people seem to think he is, then a 3rd gen eclipse is a nice looking car and its not as slow as focus, but as quick as a svt contour, which is not bad.
if he is really in to modding then yes the 2nd gen eclipse is the better choice. thats why i asked the question if he is looking for just little gains, or big gains.
i dont think this is far off from the original question. and everyones advice is what he's looking for.
and whats soo bad about mid 15's if he doesn't care much about speed anyway? the 2nd gens are only low 15 second cars its not THAT big of a difference. if were talking the gt.

this is what i was speaking of, doesn't sound like he cares much for speed. and if he thinks the 3rd gen looks better than the 2nd gen, then i think thats what he should get.

since it doesnt look like he cares much about speed, then he should get a 3G. get headers, intake, exhaust...that will give him the 'get up and go' that hes looking for. those will also help out with looks too

Kinda of a smart ass for a mod aren't you? Anyway's..... How familiar are you with the 3G? The exhaust is aleradyy excelent, and the intake doesnt make that big of a difference. Just add's some noise and pretty shiny shit under the hood. For the HP gains you get (which are minimal) it is not cost effective. I know this from first hand experience. The best mod I out on was a 1'' Helix Throttle Body Soacer. I love my custome 3" Magnaflow exhaust, and my shinny tube that hads a red filter on it. Just because somthing works for your car doesnt mean it will work for our's the same. So please do not come into our forum and tell us that we dont know what we are saying.

where do these moderators come from? man!, for real though, all points are valid and the guy will have to make the decision on his own. everybodies opinion is different, i go by fact and whats realistic.
you dont see me going into the 3000gt forum and talkin out my ass. really though, i dont care, i blew my money on the A.A.I. kit and couldnt be more pleased. F.I. is the only way to make these cars run. if he wants to waste money on exhaust, let 'em. there was thread in here, and the guy posted hi dyno runs with an without CAI and exhaust. guess what, the gains were minimal and not cost effective.
MATTG1024- Skip the 3G, and go find a 1G GSX. thats all the advice you need! they look good and are fast. for the $5k+ i've put into my 3G, i could have a GSX running in the 13's. the body and interior might look shitty, but the engine.....

understand something, i respect you, though i dont know you.
i expect respect back, this forum is open to everyone. not just 3g owners.
bite_me i didnt speak as if i'm a smart ass, maybe you took me wrong.
everyone has there opinion on what they think he should do, but dont knock down anyone else's opinion.
i WILL be in here on a regular basis, i'm gonna wipe out everything you two guys have said and start all over.
if i wasn't a cool guy i could be much more harsh, but i'm not.
again, don't knock down other peoples advice. if exhaust doesn't add any hp or intake then you can tell me that in a respectfull manner. my brother owns one, and i happen to like the 3g. but there's always ways of getting little power, so it depends on what he wants and his personall taste

just want to say hey to all the mods out there. i remember posting here for about 2 weeks straight and no mod ever showed up. now we have like 4 of them here. just a reminder guys, this is a public forum so anybody is welcome.
to the mods....the reason we make comments about you not having a 3G is b/c we get members that come in here just to bash the 3G. it seems that anybody who comes in here that doesnt have a 3G, comes out and bashes it. so we kinda have a bad impression about other members.
but anywho, HORRAY FOR THE MODS!!!

Correct. Throttle body spacers may low intake temps a bit, but realistically it is a mod that was engineered to improve fuel and air mixture and produce more power on carbuerated engines. On fuel injected cars, its gains are minimal.
