I currently have a 1989 Nissan Maxima GXE and was wondering about replacing my Catalytic Converter with a Straight 'Racing' Pipe. Is this a good mod? Easy to install yourself or hire a mechanic for a couple hours? Anyone ever done this before and liked it? Did the car sound better? Mainly looking for any general information anyone may have.
Thanks!

To answer the original question, it will help a little, but you will notice the difference more if/when you get new headers and a cat back exhaust. The only thing you have to keep in mind if you install it yourself is you have to get to directly the middle underneath the car. If you are only using jacks and jack stands, then it will be pretty difficult because of clearence issues, not to mention unsafe. Another thing to consider is the fact that the car is pretty old, and depending on where you live, there may be a considerable amount of rust on the bolts, (you might need to torch them off)
In my opinion, its not worth it to do this mod to a car this old

Question, does anyone trust those $30 cats on ebay? Thats a ridiculous low price.
And, with these performance cats, will inspection be a problem? States with tough emissions, like NY,MD, i just don't know.

It seems like those 30 dollar "performance" cat converters on Ebay are just pipes with phlanges welded to them. I don't think you'll pass emissions. Especially in Cali.
