Hey guys im just wondering what it means when people talk about modular engines? what makes them different than non modular? and my second question is what is a safe but performance oriented compression ratio on a daily driver 302

the modular engine is the 4.6 and the new 4.0, its just a different engine than the old OHV 5.0 and 3.8. im not sure why its called modular because i simply dont know that much about it.

and the 5.4 is a modular too.

They call it modular because almost all of the parts are interchangeable between them. Heads, blocks, cranks, everything is swappable, within reason of course. You can't run 5.4 rods in a 4.6 on stock 4.6 pistons, or a 5.4 crank in a 4.6 block with stock 4.6 rods and pistons, but most things are designed to be interchangeable. In a nutshell, the things that are different between a 5.0 and a 4.6 is everything.

For iron heads i'd stick to 10.5:1 or lower on good premium.

I don't think that modular is for its ability to interchange parts, because all small blocks can interchange parts, i.e. sbc, sbf, etc... I am pretty sure that the modular name is for the engines lack of pushrods. I thought that what made a "modular" motor was the OHC, or DOHC design. I assume this because the new 4.0l is now being called a mod motor, and also has this design. I could be wrong, but thats what I always thought.

There reason 4.6/5.4 are called modular motors is cause this is the name Ford gave them, durrr. lol.

The name stems from this, to save money and streamline production the made 2 blocks which could be used in cars, trucks, suvs. They would create different hp and torque numbers by different head and intake combinations(modules) for each application instead off using different blocks/motors. Hence the name Mod(modular) motors.

(Bore is 90.2mm ~ 91.4mm) 3.551 or 3.598 inches
(Stroke is 90mm or 92mm) 3.543 or 3.622 inches
(150.69mm or 148.69mm) Rod is 5.933 or 5.854 inches

That isn't true, becase a 302 crank won't work in a 351, and vice versa. Same with some heads, some cams, timing covers, timing chains, balancers, oil pumps, water pumps, distributors, etc, etc. I'm about 99.99% certain when they first rolled out the 4.6's in the early lincolns they were touting the modular as in tons of compatibility with other engines.

The 4.6 and 5.4 pistons are not the same. The bore size is the same, but they both use different compression heights, so you cannot interchange pistons. 4.6's use a 5.933" rod and 5.4's/V10's use a 6.657" rod, I don't know where you're getting this 3.6" rod mumbo jumbo from.

I meant stroke........... sorry long days and pregnant wife makes little sleep..........

unless you can find a 3.54inch long engine.......
