1996 grand am coolant problems

i got a 1996 grand am se and i started leaking coolant from it seems like middle of the engine, between the 2 tires. it was freezing (about 15 degres)out and i started it up then it smelled inside the car like coolant. can anyone tell me what i should check out and what it could be how to locate it.my heat still works though and the cooland light is on.and smokes up a little.thanks alot if anyone can help.

When it warms up a little outside you should try to find out exactly where it is coming from. Sounds to me like the water pump is going out or maybe the thermastat housing is leaking or could just be a bad hose. but you need to find out where because "seems like the middle of the engine" could be a lot of things. If you pinpoint it and have any questions, just ask.

I had a coolant leak on my 96 quad4, it was leaking as you say "down the middle of the engine." It was my water pump, but check all of the hose connections and the thermostat make sure to check the connections at the firewall for the heater core.
