i'm just doing some research for my aunt on the highlander. the biggest question i have though is how noisey is it? is there a lot of road noise? she has tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears) and loud cars will set it off. she used to own camry's for a long time because they were quiet, but then they changed something and she's been bouncing between cars ever since and now she'd like an suv. so...any pros and cons?

I think my 2004 Highlander is quiet but if she is sensitive to noise, the open back trunk may be noisier than regular closed trunk. There will lot of popping noises if back windows are partially open and front windows are closed, common complaint of Highlanders. Have her test drive one.

The Highlander is not what I would classify as quiet. I've riden in my friend's on long and short trips and it's comfortable and all that, but it's not quiet. The noise that's been written about in the Highlander when you open the rear windows down while you keep the front's up is called infrasound. It's the same for any SUV and some cars actually. It's just the passing of air across the body of the vehicle that when you open the rear windows only, it creates a 'break' in the flow which causes the 'thumping' ear pounding sound.
If your grandmother like to drive with window's open, forget a SUV. What happened with Camry that made your grandmother go away from them? I haven't found any noticeable noice increase through the last two or three generations.
