while unrelated, i know a little about the straight 6 from the earlier models, i believe its the same. they get great gas mileage, but are really quite gutless. i smashed on one with my 4cyl ranger, and thats sad. expect around 30 mpg (my friend got that on his 66')
oh, best bet for aftermarket is swap on a 2bbl carb, but mileage goes way down

I've got a 73 MachI with a 351Cld and it gets about 10-15 mpg. Depending on how many imports try to mess w/ me, then its down to about 8-10 mpg. But a straight six will get about 23-25 mpg and a V6 will get you around 18-23 mpg.

You should be getting around 25mpg like others have said. As for aftermarket, theres the Holley/Weber 5200 progressive 2bbl. As long as you stay off the floor you get good gas milage with these, if you do push it to the floor you get a nice jump in power over stock. These motors can have good power look to Clifford performance and ford six performance parts if interested.
