i'm just getting into buying a system for my car, and i ended up with 2 pioneer 10's in my lap. I have almost no knowledge iof subs and amps, so i'm wondering what i should get for an amp?
Max. Power - 500 W
Nominal Power - 120 W
Speaker Size - 10"
Impedance - 4 ohms
any input would be great

Look into Profile amps. Probably sumthing like the CA400M would work good for you. It can be had for like 70 bucks

i need an amp that will power the 2 10s...also i need a box for both subs and i don't know what size or if it should be sealed or ported. it's going in the back of a jetta, and the way the trunk is formed i have a 36" wide space, plus a ton more trunk

Yes I know, and that amp i recommended will power those 2 12's. To get the most out of those subs you will want to go ported. What's the model of the subs? You can either build the box, or have a shop or someone else build it for you. Ported will take up more space, but only thing that matters is what u can fit inside the opening into the trunk.

That amp will work fine with those subs, but i dont think a ported box would be so well. So go Sealed, about 1.00 to 1.25 cu.ft

Those subs are kinda hard to work with to get the sound that most want. To keep it simple, I'd go with what's said above. Ported sometimes makes these subs sound too muddy.

alright, thanks, you guys have been really helpful. one more thing, how much does it usually run for a box? i have a friend who might be able to do it for me, but even if he does (i haven't asked him yet), what do the supplies run for. so basically what does it cost to go somewhere and have it done and what does it cost for materials if a friend were to build it?

Watch out. Everyone has a buddy that can build a box. The problem is that they usually never use the right materials or have the know-how to make the proper box for the speakers and also the car. I can usually get some real pieces of shit to sound better than those cookie cutter stuff from the chain stores because I custom make everything.
I use commercial grade HDF board especially with high powered set ups like Directed's Studio or CompX line. The reason is that you can't have your box flex from the extreme sound pressures it will be under. This is especially true since many subs like Directeds work very good in very small, sealed enclosures. If you plan on using something like Brahma stuff, then you'll need to build a small house in order to get the right volume you need. In that case, you'll have to make sure to brace the inside of the box. The real kicker if you need a large box is all the weight you'll have. Even if you have it in a SUV or truck, you'll be looking funny having the rear drag!!!
Back to the HDF board. Unfortunately, I could never find it anywhere around like at Lowes and stuff. They only had MDF which can work for lower end or some ported style boxes. I have HDF delivered. :eek7:
