Squeaky Wheels?

There is a squeaking I hear when I'm driving slow that sounds
just like squeaking brakes but it's not when I'm applying the
brakes. Could this be wheel bearings? I haven't messed with
wheel bearings in a long time. Let me know if you need more
info and I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

If you just touch the brakes when it happens does the sound go away?

I just tried to check it out and it seems
that the sound does not go away when
braking. The sound is random.
Squeeek........Squeek..Squeeeek..............Squee eeek

If you meant ONLY Just touching the brakes but not
really braking, I think I'll have to look again. Thanks

The wheel bearings are sealed so I doubt that is your problem. The brakes have a warning sensor that will squeeze when the brakes are worn.

Time to pull the wheels and see if the brake wear sensor is touching the rotors.

sounds like it could be one of the u-joints, most likely the front one! I had to replace my front one at 30,000 miles, on my 2000 Sierra.

Do you have chrome rings around your wheels? I had the same problem, pulled off the factory wheel dress-up rings and it went away.

agree that it's time to look at the pads.I had the same thing happen one time, intermittent squeak..and it was a pebble caught between the rotor and rotor shield..pebble kept moving around so it wasn't always there! Drove me nuts!

Hope your problem is easily solved like mine was, and with no expense!

Thanks guys. I'll take off the wheels & check it out.
No, I don't have the wheels w/ the rings, But thanks.

If it goes away when you actually apply the brakes, it's the wear indicator. You need new pads. Usually, it is first noticed around corners going slowly.

I would venture to guess one or both of your brake rotors are out of round. Get them turned and ask the shop to check for flatness. If so they are pretty cheap at Autozone. I think they're around $30.00. I just did this on my 96 for the same reason. It cured the squeaking

OK, It's stating to sound like I need a brake job. I will have
to hope it holds for a couple weeks till I can have them looked
at. I don't know if it's a related prob., but when I come to a stop
and the truck "settles" back, there is a clunk and when I let go
of the brakes to go, there is a clunk and like a "settling" in the back.

Rotors it was - brakes were fine.
The rotors were a total mess.
Thanks

No, still squeaking! But differently. I took it to a shop when I
thought my brakes were bad. They replaced rotors up front
and wheel cylinders in back. They said all brakes were plenty
good. The squeak is reallt noticeable and loud in reverse. Today
I will lift it and spin the wheels & make sure it's lubed. After that, I
will have to take it back to the shop and have them look at it.

Here's another suggestion. I have a 94 Grand Am that had the issue of settling in the back then clunking when released. It ended up being a bad shock, yes a shock. Just something to look at. It took me a couple of days of messing with the brake components before I found the real issue. Good luck and sorry the rotors didn't fix your problem.

I had a squeaking noise when I first bought my truck it turned out to be the dust shield. I removed it saw where it was rubbing bent it out a little and never had the noise again

You're right, I replaced my shocks and settling &
clunking gone. Squeaking is something slightly
scraping inside hub part of new rotor. Maybe it
will go away. Thanks

You're right, I replaced my shocks and clunking went away. The
squeaking looks like it is the edge of the brake pad or something
rubbing on the hub part of the new rotor. I messed with it a bit
and threw some graphite powder on it and it's better. I expect
that whatever is rubbing will eventually wear down and stop squeaking.
Thanks for the reply.

I have had the same problem with my 1996 GMC 1 Ton Dually, thought it was the brakes, bearings, u-joints, etc. Finally found out that the factory chrome wheel stimulators on the front were turning and making the noise. Removed them and left them off till I get new ones. No more noise...
Hope this helps,
Ron
