Sounds almost like a bearing problem. if so good luck i have blown up 2 and changed them. it also could be a spark knock which is the cylinder is getting to hot and the gas is combusting before the spark. could cause damage to your pistons so if it isnt real bad try to replace spark plugs and then it just might be a bearing if you still have a problem

was it the bottom or top bnrg`s, bet was the lowers. what was your chain tension on the above mentioned engines.
Thanx

Have you tried using a large screw driver putting the metal end on different parts of the motor and the handle against your ear to lister where it's loudest?
Smokes on start up and smells like gas. Is this black smoke? If it is this is unburbt fuel and obviously you have the smell too. It sounds like you may have a bent intake valve. and as a result it's letting the fuel drip into one of the cylinders and on start up it's throwing this out through the exhaust. With the motor running, try to remove the oil filler cap. If it unscrews but is hard to take of as if there is a vaccuum insde it then a bent valve sound like the culprit. this can also happen with worn valve guides and coked up valves that do not seat 100% but as you have a clunk/rattle it makes me think this! You could try removing the valve cover and sparks lugs and then with a ratchet on the crank pully turn the engine over (it will go as there will be no compression due to no sparks) and see if any of the valves are not acting the same as the others on the intake side (closest to you at the front of the engine) also look where the lifters meet the valves to check that they are all pointing in the same direction.
