98 Remote Door Lock Programming

Quick question. I did a search on this forum for this and came as close as I could with a 2000 Blazer's instructions. I assumed it (MIGHT) be the same for programming my 98.
I went through the whole process of having the key in and off
holding down the unlock button on the drivers door (closed)
and turning the key from on to off, and once more on to off.
AT WHICH TIME, when I release the "unlock" button on the door, I hear the expected LOCK and UNLOCK that I'm supposed to, to let me know its in program mode.
At this time, it says I'm supposed to hold down the lock and unlock buttons on my remore. Although, when I do this, I don't hear the LOCK and UNLOCK that I'm supposed to. Is there a different method to this? I know you don't have to pay them the $70 to have them program it....I've been told it's a scam.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
PS-I know I have the correct remote, as I checked it with the security system w/ my VIN #

I've read that there's an alternate procedure for programming some '98s that involves shorting a couple of pins on the ALDL to put the vehicle in program mode for the keyless entry system. If you can't find that procedure, let me know and I'll dig around for it.

BUT, if your vehicle already did the lock/unlock sequence, then whatever you did should have put it in program mode already.

I find it hard to believe that you have to go through with this other method, considering the guy that I bought the car from, admits that he's not at all good at dealing with cars, and it was completely simple. I'm assuming its the way I'm attempting to do it now. Could it be I'm not holding the LOCK/UNLOCK buttons down long enough for it to program? How long should I wait?

The thread I checked that had instructions for 98 Blazer programming said it could take up to 30 seconds for the button holding step to work.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Thanks so much. I just wasnt holding it down for the full 30seconds. And now I know I have an alarm too! Thanks again!
