mathmatical conversion question

I have this guy here that is telling me that they convert horsepower from the united states to other parts of the country. I know that torque is different. Is horsepower?

I don't know. That is why I'm asking. I'm thinking that horsepower is horsepower. I'm looking for an answer not smart ass remarks. Thanks though

Do they have a conversion for horsepower like they have a conversion. Like foot miles per hour converts to kilometers per hour.

Horsepower is just the imperial unit of power, while watt is the SI equivalent. So power is measured in horsepower, watts, etc depending on the system of units being used.

Well, there is horsepower, pferdstarke (PS) (German), Kilowatts, and other measures.

There is a difference between HP and bHP. Same thing would be true for measuring power in kW. The difference is that in Europe, power output of an engine is measured with all auxiliar devices mounted on the engine (1 HP = 1.36 kW). Break horse power is measured with some of those disconected, that means that you have some more power at the flywheel.

Whether or not the rated engine power is with or without auxiliary devices is not defined by either HP or BHP. Both are general units of power and do not indicate what test procedures were done. However, something like “hp (SAE)” does indicate the test procedures used to evaluate the power rating.

As well, HP can be measured in a variety of ways and is therefore a very vague unit. BHP (brake horsepower) indicates that is was measured with a brake dynamometer which is most often connected directly to the crankshaft. By measuring power at the crankshaft engine losses (auxiliary devices, friction, heat, etc) can be accounted for so the results represent the “useful” power generated by the engine.

the only useful hp number is the one designated as (SAE net), since they do the test the same way

also hp/bhp is really an american thing, cuz europe uses kilowatts just as they use Nm for torque rating. its just that we convert it for our ease of understanding. also, japan goes off of Ps, don't know why, must be a japanese thing. you'll realize ps because when japan was setting a max hp level on their cars, they called it 280ps(we all remeber that). our idiots on this side called it 280 hp, when actually it was 276hp.

thats why in some magazines and sites, yo see 280 sometimes, and others you see 276. also, the japanese use kgm for their torque rating. each of the three "territories" have their own rating system, but the only useful ones are europe and US only because i want to say that. japanese cars are overated anyways
