Lets say you had someone elses stuff in your car. Radio, CD's, anything of value, say $50-$100. Now, lets say your car was broken into, and their stuff was taken, along with some of your own items. You were not using thier stuff, it was just left in there. Do you think you are obligated to repay them for the items taken? Like I said, you didnt ask for them to be in there, they were left there.

Could I get some inpute please. :)

You shouldn't be obligated to pay for anything. They left the stuff there of their own free will. If they try to make you pay for it, charge them a storage fee for having the shit in your car in the first place. It's not your fault it was stolen, and not your fault they left their stuff in your car...

If you had borrowed them then you would be obligated to make a payment. However since the items were left there by the said persons own mistake, you're not accountable.

exactly. Only had you borrowed the stuff. Even if you were hanging out with them, and they brought along their cd book, and left it in the car, then its still not your responsibility. Any friend would understand that, and instead of telling you to pay for it, they would feel bad that your car got broken into, and accept the loss. Its just the rules of life. You dont hold a friend accountable for something they had nothing to do with.

Put it in your insurance claim and give it to them that way if it's possible. If not, buy them a beer to say you're sorry for their loss. :)

Put them in your trunk and ask them how they like it, then blame them for torturing their items that way.

yeah, you shouldnt have to pay them unless you get some money from your insurance. I too think you should just buy them a beer and call it even.

All care and no responsibility.

As long as you didn't leave the car doors unlocked, you've taken reasonable care of their stuff. If they care that much about it they should look after it more closely.

Jimster

What taranaki said, they never left you with any responsibility to look after the items.

Of course we all know it's the rat bastard thieves who should be paying.....

i agree no responsibilty they left it there, its the fault. like others said buy him a beer and call it even.

hell no, dont buy him a beer. He should be buying you a beer. For all you know, the stuff he left sitting on the seat could be the reason your car got broken into in the first place. I say kick his ass, and then make him buy you a 12 pack for being such a jerk and asking you to pay for it.

if your friend is beeing a prick about it just tell him that the police believe the car was broken into because the burglar wanted the cd's and radio (that he left there), and then tell him that you can either call it even or that you would be more than willing to pay for his cd's as long as he pays for the damage to your car.

:lol2:

I agree with everyone else...if they left it there, it's their problem. If you borrowed it, go thru insurance.

Id say if the told you they were leaving it there, like for safe keeping then your responceable but if no then its their fault

Hmmm... Interesting replies. Here is my story.

I had this 92 civic, that I just picked up from a friend. It was a great beater (no full coverage here) that I was going to drive for the good gas mileage. The buddy I bought it from had asked for the stereo out of it. I said no big deal, I am not into the bumps like he is. He told me to go ahead and take the car, and he would grab the stereo later. I asked him to please take it out before I took the car, as I didnt want to deal with it, taking up room, getting damaged, etc. He said no big deal, he will just get to it when he can. He wanted to pull it out, so he had all the wiring, etc. Whatever I say. I had the car for three days, never once even turned the radio on. Oh well.

Along comes aquantance number 2. I gave him a ride to pick up his car, and during transit, he left a cheapo turbo timer in the back seat. I call him later that night, asking him if he wants me to drop it by. Nah he says, just keep it until he can find someone to buy it. (he lives 15-20minutes away). Whatever, I dont really want to deal with it. So it sits there for two days.

Now, here comes the night in question. We are currently staying with my parents, while our home is being built. Their neighbor hood is a very nice, upper class place. In the 15 years they have lived there, the worst "crime" that was commited, was probably me throwing snowballs at cars when I was younger.

I get home that night around 8pm, and think to myself. I'm going to go grab a sheet to throw over the windshield, so I dont have to scrape ice off every morning. So, I leave my door unlocked. I figure I ill be back out later that night.

I go inside, shower and change. Have dinner with the wife and daughter, then tuck my daughter in bed. Man, I'm feeling tired, screw going out in the cold to put a sheet on the car, I i'l do it tomorrow night. Bad idea. I get out in the morning, and the stereo was gone. (Cd player was valued at $125 new, turbo timer was trying to be sold at $50) They left the speakers, but took a amp that he had recieved for free anyways. My mistake was leaving the driver door unlocked.

Here is a icture of the car:

I mean come on, the thing looks like shit. What retard would scope it out for a stereo?

Anyways, friend #1, kind of joking, kind of serious, ask me to kick him some money for a new stereo. I am not sure how serious he really is. He jokes around alot. Friend #2, wants $100 for the turbo timer. I was like, wtf, you had it listed for sale for $50.

All that was taken of mine were a cd case full of burned cd's.

Anyways, I really dont want to pay them back. If it were me in their position, I wouldnt sweat old, used stuff. But they seem to feel otherwise.

Now, does your opinion change?

I think that you should lock your doors (and the windows) from now on.

Hmm, lock the windows.... Have to try that one some day. :)
Yeah, they say acura, but free wheels are free wheels.

Anyway, I sold that car last night. I needed extra cash to fund my 4 Runner V8 project.

Insurance won't pay out with you admitting you left the doors unlocked.

I disagree.I asked him to please take it out before I took the car, as I didnt want to deal with it, taking up room, getting damaged, etc. He said no big deal, he will just get to it when he can. He wanted to pull it out, so he had all the wiring, etc. Whatever I say.
I call him later that night, asking him if he wants me to drop it by. Nah he says, just keep it until he can find someone to buy it. (he lives 15-20minutes away). Whatever, I dont really want to deal with it.These two parts imlpy that you made a reasonable effort to get them to take their stuff, and you made it clear you were not going to worry about the stuff. It's not like either one was concerned enough about the stuff to ask you to take any particular precautions. To you, they left trash in your car.

I mean come on, the thing looks like shit. What retard would scope it out for a stereo?Agreed. We all know that by the time they got close enough to that car in the dark to see anything inside it, they were going to get it open anyway. All you did was keep them from maybe breaking the window...

Tell them that the thief has their money.

Lock the car, then proceed to pop the lock, nobody has to know, Kris ;). Unless it's already been reported, in which case, Jay has it right.

So let me get this straight... They couldn't be arsed to take their shit from your car, and friend #2 is asking for twice the timer's value? What a cock... :eek7:

About the car being unlocked, living in the UK i would never do that, nor have i ever. But i understand things are different in the States. My uncle used to leave his Beemer unlocked on the driveway and it never got nicked. So... you might want to reach a compromise with friend #1, but certainly not the whole $125 as you did ask him to take the stereo. As for friend #2, id be tempted to give him nothing for being a complete cock.

I don't agree with Jay saying that they were going to break into it regardless of whether it was locked or not. You just can't know...

You'll have to ring another insurance company up, and hypothetically explain the situation, ask them that, hypothetically speeking, if someone "hypothetically" left the doors unlocks, and it was broken into and shit was taken, can you still claim?

most insurance companys are the same, but ask them if your "assclown insurance" will do it, if they don't know, ask someone else. But dont' ring them, they'll get suspicious, and when they're not looking, TAKE THEIR PENS!
