Hi,
I have a 92 Eagle Talon 1.8 non turbo 4 cyl manual. The check engine light went off today while starting my car and I'm having a problem of starting it at first but I was able to start it but the check engine light does not turn off and somebody told me that I have to get an code reader in order for me to know what is wrong with my car. But the problem that I have is I don't know which code reader to get I know some code reader are compatible only for the year 96 and newer and I don't know which code reader to get that is compatible with my car. I went to Kragen auto and Autozone and ask those people there but they don't know either so any suggestions?
Thanks.

you can read the codes with a analog voltmeter. check the faq thread or search the forum for "how to read 1G*codes"

I posted this along time ago to help with these types of Q's....so here it is again:
You can find alot of "what if" answers by doing a SIMPLE diagnostic check.
And every newb asks the same question over and over about idling and surging...check your diagnostics.
Follow these steps:
WITH THE KEY OFF
1. Look under the dash on the driver side.
2. There is a vertical plug, sometimes with a cover, thats rectangle (this is the Data Link Connector).
3. Looking at the plug youll notice that there are only a few terminals. Now using an voltmeter connect the pos to the TOP LEFT (OBD OUTPT), and the ground to the BOTTOM RIGHT (Ground).
4. Turn the key into the on Position. It will give you a read out it passes. Either Long or short jumps with the needle.
Record your findings then check the code.
It always reads Long jumps then short jumps, and it will repeat over and over.

Try it anyway, you never know what could be wrong.
