im really looking to buy this stealth at the lot near my house and its what i consider a steal, its a 91 base with 70,000 original miles for $3500, but im kinda thinking no because i have looked EVERYWHERE and i have found no performance mods for the SOHC 3.0 the most i have seen is intake & exhaust, but i wanna squeeze every little ounce of HP out of it while keeping it NA. i wont buy it if its not even gonna break the 200hp mark, and the chances of me finding a DOHC engine in great condition are very slim without getting too expensive, and then theres the cost of installing it. DOES ANYONE MAKE PERFORMANCE PARTS FOR THE SOHC????????
(i checcked 3sxperformance.com too, its also VERY limited)

you can get a decent supercharger system for the sohc. there is also the option of a dohc conversion. i think that the supercharger. air system, custom exhaust. and some small mods that wuld lunch the car well past the 200mark. then again you can save the money you wuld use modding the sohc and just save up for a twin turbo.
then again the sohc is a better car to live with then the dohc or dohc turbo cars...... the mpg's are better and all the regular maintanacne is cheaper. and the car isnt abbused as much as the dohc's so expect that it brakes down allot less than the dohcs.

From what I heard the DOHC can get better mileage then the SOHC (I forget why)... so any thoughts...?? But yes, www.rippmods.com has a supercharger there, and it will put u past the 200HP mark, but I'd save up and get a DOHC if I were u... just my 2 cents

You can always do a VR4 motor swap, Base looks and lots of speed. I just found an insanely cheep rolling chassis in fairly good condition so I may end up dropping my engine in it and putting the stock turbo parts back on it. Light and powerful. Only downside is traction. But depending on how everything goes I may still have My AWD drivetrain that I can put in the FWD car.

ha! have fun with that conversion talskin! i know you're probably aware of all the fabrication required to make it fit, but that would be just badass if you could pull it off. and since you have all the parts, it shouldn't cost you much in the way of dollars, but plenty in profanities, cut knuckles, and smashed fingers. heck, do it, a good challenge is always fun.

Air tools, a welder, and as soon as I can afford a plasma cutter Im getting one.
I also have a chromolly roll cage sitting here, so I could drop a lot of weight if I put that in and just started cutting other things out.

heck ya! curious...what kind of welder do you have? (mig, tig, etc) and how much did it cost? how much would a plasma cutter cost?
so you know how to weld? i figure it can't be that hard. i'm gonna take an art sculpture class just b/c they teach us how to weld and work with metal a little bit. how did you learn how to weld?
ya, air tools are the way to go, but i have no place to store a compressor in college. i DO have an electric impact wrench (Kobalt->subsidiary of MAC Tools) which works alright (only puts out 220 ft-lbs). other than that, i'm aching to get an impact ratchet, and either a lift or dig myself a pit.
what tool brands do you have/stick with?

165 hp in a 3300 pound car is weak, and when i say weak i mean slow, like mid 16's slow, wait and save your money for a dohc or a 3000GT.

wait you're looking at a 91? I thought they just introduced the SOHC in 96-97 or around there.
Or have base stealths been sohc's since 91?

www.harborfrieght.com
mig / flux core welder I picked up for 175 shipped. Its the most powerful welder I could get in 110v, as I dont have any 220v sockets. The plasma cutter is around 600-800 I think. All the tools I have bought from them are "chicago electric" because that is mainly what they carry, however they look exactly like a lot of different major brand name tools, and as things go in the retail world, just because it has a different brand name a higher price doesnt mean it didnt come out of the same factor with the same parts.
Other than that I mainly stick with craftsman because there is a sears fairly close to me and I love their warranty program.

yea i kno its slow, but i figure with full intake & exhaust, and that supercherger, with some more minor tuning, i could make asbout 250, and it would be a first, since you dont find too many modded SOHC stealths/3000gt's, hell u really dont find and SOHC stealths/3000gt's

The price seems about right if its in good shape. Though you can squeeze a bit more performance out of the car, you should consider getting it more for the looks.

honestly it is basically for the looks, hell everytime i see a stealth/3000gt, it has that magnet effect, even if im doing 100 on the freeway, i end up staring at it

i would wait and keep looking i got a 93 3000 dohc for under 4K. Had a little over 100k miles but its still running strong (knock on wood).

I say get a 93 SL with around 100k, they can be had for 4-5k and will look better than a SOHC stealth, ohh and then theres that little 61 HP difference to consider.
