I have an intermitament problem with Hard shifting. I could have a problem today and not have it for several days. When it happens it is in normal driving and is even noticable when really babying it. You feel the hard shift along with a sharp drop in rpm's on the tach. So far if I just turn off the engine and restart the problem goes away. Help!!

I have the same issue.. started at 50,k and change. I have to turn off the ignition and actually open the door and get out of the car for about 2 minutes.. then it seems to reset it self.. can last for months or minutes.

I was in a GM dealer today.. they just looked puzzled. I know we can not be the only 2 with this issue.

There has to be an answer. Thanks for the reply.

My '97 Ultra had rough shifting when I bought it used (40-45k mi). The dealer ended up having to rebuild the transmission after I bought the extended warranty a week later. Sucked! Can't recall what exactly went bad -- must have been the previous owner, sorry. But, we aren't the "only three."

I am sure there has to be some GEM Service notes on this.. but so far locally they are in denial.. I recall the 77 cadillac I had.. lot of electrical trouble.. they ( GM ) denied anything.. funny in 2001 they were doing a big ad push on come back to cadillac.. the problems in the 70s are non existant anymore.. haa.. they decided to acknowledge them 25 years later.. I think that they may do the same with the park avenue.

I think I may move on to a foreign car for once.. the last Merc I had was the most costly car I owned.. the past olds were great.. but I guess gm could not make to much after market as they were not breaking down.

I have a 99 PA ultra and a 00 PA Ultra, the 99 has 118K on it and started hard shifting aroung 98K. I took it in for regular maint. to a local shop and asked him to look into it. He found 2 bad motor mounts. It still shifts hard but not nearly as bad as it did with the bad motor mounts. My 00 shifts smooth. I also noticed that the 00 has different motor mounts, so 99 and older had an issue with them for sure.

This seems more electrical then motor mount issue.. since it only happens when one reaches a certain deceleration, if one does not hit that just right.. there is no hard shift issue.. now one could reach that all the time in a days driving or not for weeks

It is a puzzler for sure

I have had the same hard shifting with my 97 Ultra. It is very very rare and may be related to heat. It has not happend since last September. It has happend a total of 4 or five time and I have 177k miles on this car so I can't complain. I also have "reset" this problem by turning off the car getting out then waiting just a minute or two. I did add a bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Fix in October. I am not really recomending this stuff but it may have helped.

I have the same problem with my 99 ultra. It sometimes hard shifts and other times it doesn't. This weekend I had it on the highway and it kept shifting up and down from OD. Has anyone had that problem as well???

My 97 PAU does the same thing also. It is more prevelant in the colder months. I do the shut off open the door and reset also. The colder it is the longer it takes to reset, sometimes overnight. I noticed that it seems to do it more when you do not come to a complete stop and the car downshifts to take off again. Like when coming to an intersection and the light turns green when you are moving about 10MPH. It will down shift and the next upshift is a noticable bang when it goes. Very annoying. It has been suggested to me to look into the TPS sensor. It is warm now so it does not seem to be a problem. I may check it before it gets cold though. Many thanks to the other folks on here about the other issues I have with this car. It is one of the fanciest cars I have ever owned. I used to have a Toyota Corrolla. It was a good deer killer, No winners in that battle. I kept the little car for the gas mileage. Yeah right. The PAU gets better mileage and has more room. Also is a bit more peppy.

My car started doing this at about 80k, now has 112k on it.

My 98 with 80k does the same thing, only when its hot out. I was thinking about replacing the tranny.
