If it is the same as the 2000, and I think it is, than in the middle of the window on the inside, there is a hump that the hatch window locks into.

On the top of the hump there should be a removeable plug. It only requires a screwdriver to pop up.

Once you get the plug off you will see the claw that is holding the window. It is a little narrower than an 1/8 inch. It will have a hump on it on the side closest to the window, about 3/4 inch below that hump there is a smaller hump. That is the catch the button operates and is a seperate piece from the piece with the large hump. If you look you will see the seam between the two pieces.

Take a small screwdriver and seperate the two. The small hump is the top of the piece that you want to move towards the window. Move the piece on the bottom toward the window and it should release the window so you can open it.

Once you get the window open you will need to remove the trim to see why the button has stop opertating.

I hope this helps and good luck!
