poor milage

i for the last few months i have been experiancing a substantial lowering of gas milage on my car. last summer the car was doing about 17.2-15.1 miles per galon. it for the last months it has gone down to around 12 miles per galon.

any ideas on whats wrong?

i have not checed it since i got it about 5k miles ago but its a k&n filter and it said check every 15k miles or something. but i will se i am waiting for a intake system so i will se if it's the prob. i have never changed the sparkplugs and wires and that stuff and the car is driven 55k miles.

is it time to change sparkplugs maybe? the car has never been to a tune up even thoug the timing belt and waterpump have been changed a while ago

definitely time for a tune up...

-spark plugs
-wires
-PCV valves
-fuel filter
-etc.

also, are you in a cold climate??? using the heat and cold weather burns more gas but i dont think it is responsible for 5 miles a gallon unless your driving very spirited...

Wow 5mpg with no CEL? Damn, you might wnat to get it hooked up and check it out anyways. Ohh and don't forget to check the air filter!

Just a few other thoughts...perhaps you have a brake pad or something rubbing against the rotor.

Also check your tire pressure...when one of my tires was leaking and got low, I definantly noticed a huge difference in acceleration and I'd assume it effected the gas mileage significantly.

i think i found the prob..... there has been well below sub zero temps in my country for the last 2 months and also the street's were full of snow! and i have been driving the car cold nearly all the time (the school i go to is just 2.3 miles away and i have been saving $ so i just go to school) and the car never even gets fully heated. it is just rediculas what the car gets to the galon. im lucky if i can get past 200 miles on one tank.

what are you guys getting many miles on a full tank?

oh yeah what is a PCV Valve?

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. this valve helps to relieve the pressure in the heads (created by the moving valves, rocker arms, lifters, and cams) by using the vacuum created in the intake.

my last 2 tanks of gas...i got crappy gas mileage. i was about to investigate and post, but this tank i've gotten about 110 miles so far on just 1/4 tank, so i think everything is back to normal (i HAVE been driving her a little hard in the past...there's one possible problem).

As far as gas mileage goes, i think i average about 20-21 mpg. I've gotten up to 25/26 before on the highway in cold weather.

i see. then i think i am getting good milage. my town is nearly nothing mut hills upp and down. so its normal that my car spends a bit more gas.

My personal best is a average of 27mpg on one tank. wich reminds me. is it comon that the cruise control fails on these cars? mine hasnt worked since i got it! and i just had a convo with the guy who imported my car and he said that it worked when he imported it.

i have also been wondering do i need the steering wheel with the speed adjuster to let the cruize control work?

I don't know about the steering wheel question...I don't think it is typical for cc to fail...if you swapped steering wheels, perhaps it wasn't wired up properly again. If you still have the stock, perhaps it is the sign of a failing Speed Sensor or a problem with the cc unit, but I would think such an error would throw an CEL.

As far as mpg...I get 270 miles per tank around town, and 360 all highway, somewhere in between if I combine...but I also average 90-105mph ALWAYS on the highway, and I tend to race quite a bit around town...so obviously mine has the potential to be higher if I didn't drive it like I stole it...but hell, it's a car that was meant to go fast.

Once when i blew a tire on the highway and was doing 50mph on my spare, I had the potential to get 550miles from that tank at least, so driving styles definantly make a huge difference as well.

i wuld think an automatic has alot to say with the milage on these cars.....

i have also been wondering for a while. my car seems to be reving 500rpm's more than it realy is. like my idle is 1400rpm's the problem is that the motor is realy reving 900rpm's but the gauge always shows 500 more. if i just swich the car on(not starting the motor) the rpm gauge shows 500rpm's have any of you guy's had the same problem? and the gas gauge also is wrong when i fill the tank it only shows 7/8 full and when emty the needle is so far down that it is about 1cm below the line before the gas light comes on.

do you have aftermarket guage faces???

it sounds like the needles were removed to install new guage faces and they did not get the needles back where they are supposed to be. when your car is not on, your guages rest on the little bar sticking out, when you turn your car on, they move from the little pole to where they should be. thats what it sounds like to me...

as for cruise control, did you check the fuse???

yes i have been looking for the CC fuse. but i cant find one. i have a suspicion that the CC is controled entirely by the ecu.

and no i dont have aftermarket gauge faceces and the needle rests on the right place when the car is not swiched on (not on the "A/C") and suddenly when switched it turns to 500 and then you start the engien and it goes to 1400.

your needles are rested on the A/C???? huh??? no, there is little bars sticking out on your guage panel that keeps the needle from going past that mark. when your car is turned off the needle rests on those little pieces of plastic. when you car is turned on they go wherever they are supposed to be. whether its 0 or 1500PMs...

if someone has removed the needles and put them back in the wrong spot, it would do that. thats all im saying...

NO he means the A/C (accessories) setting on the ignition key hole on the steering column.

you mentioned that it has been pretty cold where you are? like sub-zero temps even? its quite common for these engines to jump to 1500+ rpms upon a cold start up. just a thought. but when your tach needle moves when you just turn the car on, that baffles me. i'd check the gauge fuses, b/c the needle shouldn't move at all until the car is started.
