Gas problems

My 2000 ford explorer gas gauge has a mind of its own. When I fill it up, the needle only stops at 3 quaters full. When I'm running low, the needle goes anywhere from halfway to the red. Could this just be a fuel pump relay fuse problem only or something else? I'd rather pay for a new fuse than to take it in for repair. Any answers? Thanks.

Sounds more like a sending unit than a fuse. If a fuse blew, it would only read empty or full and not move. Possibly a gauge. Usually, though, it is an in-tank sending unit.

My 2000xlt takes gas so slowly, I almost
have to spoon feed it, in oreder to get a decent
fill.

I am new to the site...so forgive me if you answered this somewhere already but, did you get this fixed? It looks like an older post...my 99 exploder just left me stranded with a similar gas gauge problem.
I filled it up and then 20 miles later it registered red and quit. I added more gas (i thought someone had siphoned my tank!) and then it registered full and started, next day it registered 1/4 tank and later red line again and check gauge lite on the whole time. It is not quitting now though it sputters here and there...

Are you guys filling up while vehicle is running? I read somewhere that this will mess up your gauge up for a few driving cycles. Shut the vehicle off to pump gas.

Drop the tank replace the sending unit.
