My oil light was flashing and i took my 99 passat 1.8 turbo to the dealer and was told there was no oil pressure and that I needed a new engine. What's the truth and the approx cost for an engine. Thanks.

Zero pressure? They didn't suggest a new oil pump? Was the engine making alot of noise or driven with the light on?

Zero pressure? They didn't suggest a new oil pump? Was the engine making alot of noise or driven with the light on?No, they didn't mention a new oil pump at all. They performed an oil pressure test and I was told that they found the oil pressure at .5 bar at start up and 0 bar at idle. When the oil light began to flash I was less than 2 miles from the dealer and went directly there. There was some noise, it sounded light the car was low oil.

First Thing Get Service Records, Vw Has In Effect Extended 1.8 Turbo Warranty For Oil Sludge Condition, If Oil Changes Were Done Then You Get Free Engine. But You Have Got To Have Records

Oil sludging seems common. Before I'd replace the engine I'd have them check the bearings for signs of damage. If all looks okay I'd try a new pump first.
