Thermostat

Getting ready to change mine in the 97 gt. Does it have a gasket or just the O-ring? Daughters car won't warm up so I fugured that is what it has to be.

97's have a gasket.

Best way I found to change it, so to dont have to drain all the coolant out ,is to use a turkey baster and remove enough coolant out of the radiator so that the level is below the upper radiator hose.Here are some instructions if you need them Click Here (http://www.pfyc.com/supportfiles/tstat/tstat.htm)

Here is what it say's at the first part of the instruction's.

Equipment Needed:

· 10 mm socket
· 6" Socket extension
· Gasket scraper (or razor blade)
· Flathead screwdriver
· New Thermostat
· Thermostat rubber “O” ring*
· Thermostat Gasket**
· Extra coolant
· Paper towels and/or shop rags
· Saftey goggles and plastic gloves reccomended

*denotes optional item
**Gasket required for '97/'98 model year Grand Prix's

I do know that my 97 had a gasket,because I had a paper towel inside the hole of the manifold to keep the crap from falling inside and not having alot of room to scrape the surface of the manifold.Thats what took me the longest,was just removing all of the gasket material.That's when I was wishing that mine had an O-ring :lol:

I have also heard that not all 98's used a gasket....early models had paper,later models used O-ring

Never had to change the one on the 97. Had the 160 put in at shop when they were doing something else.
Will have to stop reading these sites. Gets me in trouble.

Yep,
97's do have a gaasket. Just replaced mine a few weeks ago.

Thanks everyone. Would have been to easy to just drop a new one in with the o-ring!
