Replacing battery cables

'92 XLT 4WD. My positive cable needs replacing - but auto shops want 2.5 hrs - over $200. I took a look and it does seem like a complicated routing under the engine with clips and several connections. Is is really that time consuming a job? Is it something the weekend mechanic like me should try? Any tips?

Also the negative cable while I'm at it.

get a hyanes manuel at a autoparts store,,,,or a chiltons

those manuels have alot of good info but remember...

VERY IMPORTANT remove the negative cable (BLACK) first, and during reinstallation put the negative cable on last EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

sounds like a minor job....not worth $200

Not difficult to do. Follow BlitzKeg advice. Also tie a long twine onto the battery side of the cable first. Remove the starter side end of cable, unclip the clips. Tie the other end of twine onto the new cable on the starter side. Now from the bottom of vehicle slow pull the old one out. The twine will assist threading the new cable into place. Connect the clips, starter side of cable, battery side of cable and finally your negative connector and away you go.

Everything you've been told thus far is great advice. Exspecially the twine thing. It will not be difficult if you take your time and have patience. Negative cable definately off first whether you replace it or not. It's not magic, it's whether your willing to crawl under the vehicle for $200.00
