there both virtualy the same engine, the y8 has a dif intake manifold i think. But the y8 is obd 2 so that is harder to swap over. i would say go d16z6

u need a wiring harness if you plan on using the injectors and you need a obd1 o2 sensor. so i say pretty much whatever you can find a wiring harness for. unless you are using obd0 injectors and have the plugs for them or you just want to rig them up ghetto style.

I was thinking of using the z6 head, y8 head gasket and possibly y8 intake manifold. I thought I heard that you can go OBD1 for the y8 manifold (best d manifold) but just use whatever sensors are used for whatever OBD you're gonna run with it.
My question is, would it be possible to find a z6 head complete with the dizzy, buy a p28 ecu and get the conversion to OBD1 harness (or just run more wires and vtec sensors, etc.)? Cuz I would rather go this route than rpm activated switch blah blah...

you will also need a 4 wire o2 if you want to run obd1.

if you didn't want to convert to obd1, the Y8 would be a wayyyyy easier swap. The d16a6 distributor bolts right up like stock. Your done.
run vtec with a vafc.
You almost have to convert to obd1 to put in a z6. The d16a6 distributor doesn't bolt up and it has to be hacked up to be made to fit....and you lose the ability to adjust your timing.

So if I got a Y8 Head and headgasket and VAFC, I wouldn't need to convert to anything and can retain my PM6 ecu and dizzy and vtec would work as it should? Cuz I don't want to even waste my money if I'm not going to get the full potential of the vtec head.
I wouldn't mind saving my A6 block and do the mini-me basically to save money and not have to pull it all apart. I have lightweight underdrive pulleys and AEM adjustable cam gear, can I use those. Is the cam gear different for vtec cam?

There are soooo many more differences than that. The whole engine is different...everything about it.
The distributor, cams, Intake manifold, oil pan, oil pump, pistons, head (combustion chamber shape), and im sure theres a million more...i had the task of putting a z6 into a 97 civic. I had to swap over almost everything from the Y8 except the block and head itself. People just say there the same because they put out similar HP numbers. IMO the z6 is a better motor to build because it has 125 hp with a crappier Intake manifold and a much lower compression than the Y8.
I would say to run a Y8 head on a Z6 block....with the Y8 IM and just use the obd0 injectors and distributor and ecu. Then use a vafc for vtec....

yes, vtec can be activated with a vafc easily. And you can even adjust your fuel tuning....its great. you can find one used on HT for less than $150 which is the price you'll pay for an obd0 to obd1 ecu jumper harness anyway.
Is the cam gear different for vtec cam?
Nope. all dseries cam gears are the same; they all bolt up the same and can be switched around.

Sweet, well, if I ever get any extra cash I'm going y8 head and vafc. And with my mods, I'm guessing I'd pull more than 130hp out it... nice

how much should the swap cost total and installation.?

cant say. it's fairly simple and would be a good way for you to learn more about honda's and their motors. It's gonna be difficult to find a place to swap the head and do all the fine tune work it takes to make a mini me hybrid.
Your only option is to find a honda swap shap.
But, there's to many factors to quote a price for that kind of work.
