lately my car has been having spells where it runs really bad sputtering and the check engine light comes on then i let off the gas and its fine is it plugs or what

Could be plugs, but if your check engine light it coming on I would bet O2 sensors. You can take it to a dealer and have them pull the codes, or if anyone near you has a datalogger they can do it too.

Most Autozones will run the ECU for codes for free
