I'd avoid the 02's, as they seem to have the most problems of any of the years. I have an 04 and am 100% happy with it so far....except for the crappy mileage :(

I have an 02 and I love it. I only payed 15,900 for it with 27,000 miles on it just last week. Make sure it has 4x4 of course.

my service engine soon light came on on my 02 tb and i had it diagnosed and they said it was my evap emmisions. They told me from now on when i get gas to shut my vehicle off DO NOT LEAVE IT RUN! who wouldve thought this would cause the service engine soon light to come on!

Go for it. I have had my 2002 since June of 2001 and had no serious problems with mine. Make sure you get an extended warranty since parts will be expensive for replacement

I have an 02' TB that is an LS. I will NEVER NEVER NEVER buy another Chevy. I had an Eddie Bauer Explorer 98 before this. What a mistake to get this. It is a mechanics dream! Its check engine light comes on at least once a month. It is junk in my book. The first chance that I get to ditch it, I am. I have 42K on it. It has seriously deteriorated in value, performance and pizazz since I bought it....just my opinion though.

I Have the 2002 TB with no problems. I never had the check engine light come on But It did vapor lock one time when I was getting gas while it was running. The pump kept clicking off ,It took me 10 minutes to put in a gallon and half of gas. Never happened again because now I turn it off while getting gas.

I have always been told to make sure and shut the car off when you are pumping gas. The dealership says that water vapor in gas tank can set off the sensors causing the check engine light to come on. Anytime that I get my old changed (by dealership) after the car is shut off two or three times, the check engine light comes on. I have to take it in there to be reset. One mechanic told me that I had the worst TB when it came to error codes. He said that my log was full of them. I did just have a tune up done and they checked belts, fluids, brakes, changed oil and ran diagnostics on it. They said it was purring like it should be. I was also troubled by the falling out of the value. Kelly Blue Book says the retail value for a dealership is $18-19K but they are selling right and left for $13-16K here in my town. The miles may vary but nothing incredible like 100K or anything. My husband is a Chevy man. I have always been a Ford girl or a foreign. My VW purrs like a kitty and have had excellent luck with it. If I could get out from under it right now, I would in a heartbeat!

Call me crazy, but aren't there sign all over the place at gas stations telling you to SHUT THE ENGINE OFF? Anyone know why? If someone is keeping their car running next to me pumping gas, I kind of get annoyed. If the sign says shut off your car, why would you leave it running? I mean, it saves zero time, and it isn't like you are saving any "starter use" by not shutting off the car each time you pump gas. Enlighten me on why you guys would leave your car running....there are quite a few people that do this. I am not flaming anyone, just curious. And I am not a confrontational person, so I can say this while noone can see me!! hee hee ;)

According to the car guys on NPR on Saturdays, the primary reason for the signs warning drivers to turn the engine off while pumping gas is to reduce the likelihood of the car dropping into gear and moving, possibly hitting someone or causing a fire hazard by hitting a gas pump or ripping the hose off the gas pump. There is no safety hazard in terms of combustion from putting fuel into a car with the engine running. This thread is the first I have heard of an actual mechanical reason to turn the engine off.
There are a variety of reasons someone might want to leave the engine running while pumping gas -- such as continuing to run the heater for passengers if it's really cold, or my kids screaming not to turn off the DVD player in the middle of a movie (it draws too much current to operate in ACC mode).
Then there are those alarmist emails warning about fires caused by sparks jumping from the hose to the car body -- supposedly caused by putting the hose in the tank, turning it on, getting back in the car, then getting out and gripping the hose. The time in the car builds up static electricity or changes the person's ground or something. I think there was another claiming cell phone use while pumping gas could cause an explosion... Obviously, the only way to be safe is to never refuel.

Never refuel... ha... do you drive a TB? :grinno: 215/tank local, 315/tank hwy

215/tank... what's up with that. Why is the gas mileage so terrible in these things? I just put an aftermarket intake and a K&N filter in it, that will supposedly help out... will a throttlebody spacer help also? Any other ideas?

Don't get me wrong... I drive hard... 13.5/gal on avg... hwy much better... huge difference in driving 70mph - 85 though... obviously!
If I knew it would have been like this... i would have kept my Tahoe!

Ha!! Good point...I may never refuel again!!
I always thought it was due to fire...what are the odds of the car dropping into gear...that would be a heck of a malfunction!! :P

Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY FROM THE 02 TB. I bought my TB new in May 02. It now has 40,000 miles and has been nothing but a headache!
Here is a list of all my problems.
13,000 miles:
- Replaced Driver Door Lock Rod
- Realigned exhaust system
- Reprogram powertrain controler
17,000 miles:
- greased rear springs(squeaking)
- 1st recall override lever
26,000 miles:
- replaced the transfer case select switch(4wd switch)
34,000 miles:
- 2nd recall windshield wiper moter seal
- repair leak in rear
- replace rack and pinon on both sides
- replace tackometer gear
36,000 miles:
- REBUILT TRANSMITION
39,000 miles:
- replaced fuel tank pressure sensor
I think I have left out a couple of other issue I just can't remember them.
If I hadn't bought an extended warrenty It would have over $3000 worth of repairs.
Maybe look at a newer year. I think they worked out some bugs

One reason that they tell you to shut off the engine when getting gas is because the fuel systems on some cars runs off a vacuum and you lose that vacuum in the tank when you open the filler cap and can cause the car to stall or the check engine light to come on... light usually goes off after you shut the car off on restart it

I have an '02 2WD and I love it. The only problem I have had with it is that the brake lights quit working. GM had a recall for the lamp sockets and they fixed it NC. I get 16-18 MPG city and a consistant 22MPG hwy. Runs and drives great. Since I live in SC I didn't need the 4WD.

I never buy new, always used. i bought my 02 4wd at 40000 mi. in 04 and had no problems. I figure by about 40000 mi. most of the bugs should be worked out and the vehicle is still like new. I get 19mpg pretty consistent. on hwy going 73-78 mph. I'm happy w/ that.

Yeah, it sure isn't worth buying a TB new with the way domestic SUV's depreciate! First model year runs of any vehicle can be a crap shoot. Good news is, most of your 2002's should have their bugs worked out by now & be a real good buy! :naughty: Personally, I'd still go for an '03-'05. So far so good with our '05. Love it.

Yes, 03 or newr would be better, but the price was right for the 02 at that time. although if a fuel filter plugs i'd rather have one before 05, not in the tank. I d/k why people buy brand new. wait a year and pay almost half and get the same vehicle, even if u have the mone to buy new who wants the headache to take it in all the time to fix little stuff that happens on new vehicles?!
