When you start you car up in the morning after is being really cold, does anyone hear a quiet nock comming from their heads? Then after a minute or so its no longer there? Ever since this damn weather got here, i've had this quiet nock when it first starts up and i had it into the dealership yesterday and they said it was normal for this time of year. I think that damn intake is making it sound more dramatic that is really is. Just lookin for some input. And only 58 more days till spring everyone!

I don't know exactly what it is, but its probably because of the oil being so cold and thick it takes an extra second to lube everything up and quiet down.

Yep.. thats what i am leaning towards. Last winter the cav has got to go through. Finding a ratt for next winter and she we become a garage baby. I swear this car dosn't like winter i have soo many problems with it during it. But loves the summer. I had my vavle cover gasket i had to replace last winter along with a new Ignition system. I had to do this in -12 degree weather... oh well...i think the intake is making it more noiser than it was last winter...

I froze my hand to my intake today. I set it too high and it rubbed the soundproofing a little and had a black mark so without much forsight I lcked my finger and then tried to rub it off! My finger is a little sore now! It's only -18 for christs sake!!!!! Yeah my old 01 Neon sounded like a tank the other day when I started it for my sister. It's just the cold. Everything gets harder and contracts and the oil gets gloop and doeasn't want to do it's job!

Well its balmy where i'm at, it was only 5 this morning...but the noise is common and nothing to be concerned of, as long as it goes away. I'm on my third cavalier and all of them just hate the cold....guess we all need to be someplace warm, with our cars.....

Ya I know what ur talkin bout - our 98 does that - i believe its either a sticky valve when its cold or just the injectors having a harder time cause of the temp. for some reason the 89 2.8 doesnt do it -

damn OHV's... lol

lol ya man....
My DSM 3.0 TT is so loud... the injectors sound like 50 people repedatively clickin a pen in an out....
Its the way the injectors are though... they go that fast be they are computer controled by speed so the amount of fuel allowed out is determaned by the rpm's but the injectors always are goin the same speed an making the same amount of noise except when the turbos are at full boost...

Its was pretty interesting i thought learning that - why not share it eh? crj

me engine is normal in the cold. I started the other day at about 0F, started right up and sounded normal. I do notice the RPMS have a tendency to be really touchy when its cold though. Sometimes if i barely touch the peddle the car will jump to 3,000 RPMS, then i give it a decent amount and the RPMS just hold steady. This is only for like a minute when its cold, after that its fine. As for knocking, nope non at all. I use Penzoil Synthetic so that might be why. BUt your engine is a little to old now to want to switch a synthetic.

Have this noise with mine too (2002 OHV Cavalier with 21,000 miles). Also had a 1996 S-10 2.2 OHV that was a little louder. Noise goes away completely when it's warmed up for a couple of minutes. I'm thinking that it's piston slap, as lifter noise is different and usually goes away quicker. Was told by the dealer that it's nothing to worry about but the dealer wouldn't confirm that it was piston slap.

If it was piston slap they wouldn't have told you it was ok!

Why is that exactly?.. last 2 oil changes i've switched over to mobile one 5w-30. I heard all it would do was created oil leaks around the gaskets... But i have none of that... any other input?

It doesn't burn off and can leave a gloopy residue in your motor! older cars with high miles will usually use a little oil just through wear.

It shouldn't cause any big problems. Not unless your mileage is up past like 120k or so. I'm trying to find out if anyone has used a higher viscosity oil in an LD9. I want to hopefully use higher visc for Autocross and just summer use but don;t know anyone who has put anything above the 5w30 in. Don't know if it was cause problems with the sprayers! Anyone have any words to the Wise!
