I just recently bought a used 1991 Taurus LX and it requires a valve adjustment. I bought it from my friend's co-worker, and my friend assured me he could do this for me after I purchased it. We were talking and he said it would take him a few days because the Taurus book he has only says "leave this to the professionals" on valve adjustment.
I was wondering if someone knew or knew what book would be good to point us towards for what we need to adjust it to. Sorry I'm not quite sure what to ask, he's the mechanic guy and I'm the computer guy hence asking on this forum. =P

Not sure what you are trying to do. The engine has hydraulic valve lifters that self adjust. Is it making a noise?

Yeah its making valve click sound when I drive it around, barely audible.

Lots of things make a "valve click" like sound. Is possible that is the valve mechanism but if you take a valve cover off you will not find adjusting screws. There are additives that quiet hydraulic lifters but you should get someone to listen to it before you jump to conclusions.

Yeah my friend who's a mechanic is the one who pointed it out cos I probably wouldn't have really noticed the sound myself. If you could recommend a good Taurus book that'd be great cos the one he has now isn't so good.

Can find a Chilton or Haynes book at auto parts stores like Pep Boys. It may be what you already are referring to. They used to be great publications but have economized considerable. Thumb thru one before you buy it to make sure it covers what you are looking for.

my old mazda used to make that noise. as it turns out it wasnt a valve sticking.a bearing had become worn and was slapping against the block. i bought some lucas oil additive and it quieted the noise quite nicely
