single turbo setup

I am planning on doing a single turbo set up on a ford 331 v8. I was wondering what would be a good turbo to look for Ebay or junkyard wise to rebuild for this?

why would you want to use a single turbo on a V8? the plumbing should be much eisier with a twin setup. If you do manage to plan out a good single turbo system you are probably looking at getting a turbo from a diesel engine as i cant think of any turbo cars that would have a large enough turbo for a v8. maybe try to find a a dodge with a cummins turbo diesel in it.

How much power do you want?
A turbocharger like Holset HX40, 50 or 60 or Garrett GT37, 40, 42 or 45 should probably work depending on how much power you want.

These turbochargers have often twin scroll turbine housings which can be suitable for your application. If it has ported shroud that is also good.

Look at the flow ratings on the turbochargers. Generally every 1lb/min of airflow yields 10hp. Not an exact science, but a good guestimation. The best way to size a turbocharger for your engine is to get a book like "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell and/or "Turbochargers" by Hugh Macinnes and use the formulas they provide. And after you do that, look at compressor maps and see what turbo fits your application. Just because the turbo flows the amount of air you need it to doesn't mean its going to do so efficiently. If you aren't careful, you may end up with a giant heat gun aiming at your intake or something that doesn't make power until you are about to shift. Good luck. I bought a t04turbo with a .96 a/r today. guys from turbonetics and innovative turbo recomend this size for strong upper rpm on engines between 300-350 cubic engines. I hit right in the middle with my 331. can't wait to start peicing the rest together. later . . .
