The stupid questions continue

Okay, I finally found a nice G20 relatively close (2 hours away). The catch is it has fifth gear popout. He said he might let it go for $2200 if he doesn't fix it. The car has a champange exterior with a tan cloth interior with a five-speed and 160,000 miles. Should I just walk away? I have looked for more info on popout on se-r.net and sr20de forum and this forum and haven't found much beside "yup it's a common problem" and a parts list. Can you direct me to more info? Sorry for the long post.

Tell him $2k, then buy that tranny off ebay, in the post below, then swap the tranny out.

SE-R.net should actually have a page that tells how to fix it. Unless they took it down.

What the heck, swap in the engine too. It's got half the miles you would.

If it's the same engine it said it had a rod knocking. The guy said that he couldn't go lower than $2200. You really think it's worth it? He said it looks like new and has been well maintained. Thanks for the opinions, they really do help.

oh yeah, it's a '93

'93 or '93.5? If it has auto seatbelts it's a 93. FYI - I just bought an auto (darn it!) G20 about a month ago. It was in good condition, leather, sunroof, etc. 93,500 miles and I paid $6678 plus warranty, ridiculous doc fees, tax, title, license, etc. So to me your price sound damned good.

Inkorekt

I haven't looked at it to tell if is a 93.5 or not. Either way, I think I'd be pretty darn happy to have a G20.

Even to take it in to get fith gear fixed is like $700 I think.

Not too bad, I think I'll call him tomorrow and try to look at it.

You should be able to pick up a used 5-spd tranny for a couple hundred dollars. I'd think somewhere around $300 would be a resonable price, maybe less. Heck, even if you have to get a non LSD model (like most G20's are) it shouldn't be a big deal. It's a pretty easy fix, just try and find a tranny with low miles, if possible. A new motor (imported Primera motor) can be found for under $500 shipped most of the time too. I know here in Az a couple guys have gotten them under $400 shipped on multiple occasions.

Just get the car, buddy!

FYI - Last year I bought my "pop out special" '94 G20t and it's been the best car I've ever had.

Look at it this way: A used car with a single, very obvious defect like a 5th gear that won't work is often sold SIMPLY for that one reason. Once you fix it, you will likely have a very good car.

Picture the situation of the current owners..... one spouse nags the other "That car has got to go! It's nine years old, it's only a four cylinder, has darn near 100,000 miles on it, fifth gear keeps poppin' out while I'm on the freeway, and I need a new Chevord Grand Limited Vortec Magna Ram Super Duty Ultra Mega Dyna Eddie Bauer Excretion SUV so I can take little Susie to Ballet lessons in safety, just like the other parents! Besides, how am I gonna hold my double-shot espresso, talk non-stop on my cell, key my palm pilot, and simultaneously do my eyeliner when I've got these gears to shift?"

It's only when a car seems to have no major problem that I start to worry why the party is selling a car. It just means the car has a ton of hair-pulling little problems to ruin your time once you own it.

Seriously, get the G20.....no regrets!!!!

I was under the assumption the 5th gear popout syndrome was only on the Sentra SE-R's, but the NX2000's and G20's did not have any probs' with that. If that is the case, I would ask more questions to how or why he believes it is the 5th gear syndrome. Might be more to it.

Just a thought!

Nope, 5th gear popout can happen to G20's too. I know a couple guys who got it on their G20s.

I looked at the car this weekend and guess what, it has a brown dashboard and door panels. Who in their right mind would get a brown dash? it will need a whole new tranny, as second gear grinds on top of popout. It also seems a bit sluggish, my s-10 accelerates quicker. He also won't go lower than $2200. Does it still sound like a good deal? Is the dash and door panels hard to change colors?

I had it a few months ago. I was under the impression it was all sr20de transmissions pre '98. I might be wrong, someone correct me:bloated:

Um yeah, there is nothing wrong with a brown interior. Tan leather, the works.

Oh, I see I stepped on some toes with the brown interior comment. Okay, it's alright but I whine constantly so it was something to complain about. Is the tranny hard to swap out?

Define hard. Hard for my grandmother to do? Yes. Hard for a mechanic to do, no. Hard for someone with some knowledge of working on cars, not really.

I've put in an engine in my S-10 and I'm toolmaker so I dont think I should have too much problems then. Do you have to take the engine out or do you just drop a crossmember or something?

When I take the tranny out, I just drop a crossbeam, and disconnect a few other things, and then it drops right out. I thought it wasn't too bad.

I paid for it today. I had to wait to take it home because I have to insure it first, but I should pick it up this week. Awesome. All I need is a tranny; maybe a JDM SR20. How do I tell if it is a limited slip? Would it say in the VIN#? I couldnt find much doing a forum search.

I'm a legit member now!:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Welcome to the "family!"

And yes, most everyone here who has a P10 got the shaft of the brown dash and interior to "match" the tan leather. Sure, it's vomitous, but honestly, if you just look inside as you pass by, it's hardly noticable!

Pics would rule!

I'll take some pics when I get it home. Getting those pics developed and scanned is a different story. I think I have film from two years ago floating around still. I have grown used to the brown dash, but it doesn't quite make me thank God for earth tones yet.

And such a wonderful club it is. Gotta love the earth tones. I'm thinking of replacing the carpet with astroturf and painting the outside olive drab to become closer to nature.
