Hi, let me first say that Im a DSM guy so dont make fun of me for asking this. I love the throaty sound of the wrx, and I was wondering if all imprezas(N/T) sound the same way with an exhaust system? I have no idea, maybe its just the turbo but I just want to know if all older imprezas sound the same. Thanks

speaking from experience, yes they all sound throaty i have a 97 impreza l wagon, n/a 2.2 liter and it sounds choppy and thoaty with the apexi n1 i have...it the way to boxxer is set up that makes it sound that way...more so with turbos but both along the same line

Do you understand what you said there, because it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

My thoughts exactly when I first read that.

I think the engine tone you are referring to is an inherent tone from a boxer engine, and it's pretty consistent in all the Imprezas.

The turbo ones are slightly smoother (slightly), but that nice rumble is still there.

What if he drives a JDM DSM?

Well, considering that to be JDM it would have to be right hand drive, it could well be.

The US market Impreza can't even be considered JDM since they are only similar to their Japanese counterparts.

Even my little 1.8 sounds throaty with the 2 inch custom exhaust I had built for it. Magnaflow dual outlet muffler at stock location, removed one cat.

I agree the boxer configuration is where the sound comes from so none of us are tinny and ricer sounding like some inlines can be.

Most Porsches are boxers, yes.

Not knowing anyone lucky enough to have one, I can't say for sure but I would wager they are throaty too.

The Porsche engines are higher pitched, most likely due to the shorter exhaust. All the Porsche boxer engines are either mid-or rear-engined.

Ooh, that's a good point. I didn't think about that. I only know of a couple of Porsches that don't use a boxer and they are front engine(928 and 924).

You're right, the configuration in the Porsche would create a much shorter exhaust. I know the more piping there is bewteen the engine and the muffler, the quieter the engine. But having less could definitely raise the tone.

I think we need someone to donate some Porsches for us to conduct tests and really figure this out. :)

Porsche 911s have pretty much always been boxers. Look it up.

Do a little research. The following Porsches all were available with a horizontally opposed 6-cyllinder engine:

all 911's (911, 930, 935, 959, 964, 993, 911 GT1, 996, 997)
914-6
956/962
934

The 912 and 914 were horizonally opposed 4 cyl engines.
The 917/30 was a horizontally opposed 12 cyl.

There are others, but certainly more than the Boxster came with a Boxer engine

"Just as good" in terms of reliability, maybe, but on a track the 911 spanks my WRX stock for stock.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I know the WRX isn't the fastest car in the west. :disappoin That's ok tho, bang for the buck!
