97 safari fuel pump price gouge

does anyone know if there is there any way of modifying the fuel system wiring harness/&or system on a 97 safari to be able to use the fuel pump from a 96 safari? Or is the entire tank with fuel pump from a 96 useable with the 97 wiring harness(with or without modifications). the price difference between the 2 model years is in the range of 4-500%(ouch!) So I'm curious if anyone has been able to find a way around this dilema yet.

i live in canada and i was given a price of $900,scares me.

yup, that's the price I was first quoted from the dealer, the price I was able to finally get from a jobber was $500. Update: I just had to replace said pump for the second time in 9 months and discovered the reason why(I'm hoping). when the pump was replaced last time the repair shop replaced the harness to the pump with a used one because a new one wasn't available at the time and we couldn't wait for a new one to be brought in. upon inspection of it while changing this pump I discovered that the ground wire spring loaded tab inside the main plug was discolored grey and had lost it's preload curvature so that the ground was compromised. NOTE TO ALL OWNERS OF THESE MODEL YEAR VEHICLES; for the life of your pump it would be adviseable to cut the ground wire out of the main harness plug(I actually cut both the ground and the power and bypassed the plug entirely) and attach it directly to the frame ground where it ends up anyway. this ground wire simply goes through the plug and gets grounded to the frame within 6 inches of coming out the other side of the plug. another example of fine GM engineering! For the convenience of being able to simply unplug the harness to change the pump, instead of having to remove the ground wire separately, the vehicle owners are being penalized with shortened pump life. almost seems like a racket to me considering the reputation these vehicles have for going through fuel pumps! Hope this helps others save unnecessary grief and money!
