First off, low fluids or an overheated engine will not cause a check engine light to come on. A bad sensor related to emissions will. Take it to autozone, pep boys, a ford dealership, any shop that can read the codes causing the check engine light. Once we know the codes, we can help, assuming the shop doesn't fix whatever is wrong, but we need codes and possibly the circumstances when it comes on.

I should also add that 99% of the time driving a car with the CEL on will not leave you stranded beside the road.

Blueyes47, start the car, and put it in reverse. Give it a HAIR of gas. If it stalls, or is jerky..it's most likely the Mass air flow sensor.
This happened to me, this also happens in drive-if you give i alittle gas-it wants to die. Hopefully it's only that, cause it's under $100 to fix.
Go to autozone, scan it..
If you need a maf sensor, go to www.directauto.com

And if it sputters and misses constantly it could be egr related and if the CEL comes on after 5-10 minutes of driving it could be an O2 sensor and if you have to constantly give it a little gas at a stop light 'cuz it won't idle it could be your TPS and if.....
