My buddy came over the other day, opened up my 5 year old custom computer that a guy at my dad's work made for me and found some things in it.
- AMD K6
- ATi graphics card
- Sound blaster card
- Nero Cd burner
- Windows 98
- 4 GB hard drive
I don't know a whole lot about computers. I can program but with the internal stuff, I'm a little fuzzy on. So is this setup good? My buddy also had a spare computer and put in a LG 58x cd drive and another 3 1/2 floppy drive just for the hell of it. He also put in a 2 usb ports which I didn't have either. And upgraded my ram memory from 64mb to 128mb with the extra memory sticks he had. So now I can actually run age of empires 2 which is just plain awesome.
So after all said and done, I'm starting to really get into building computers now. I want to upgrade it too so I can run FPS on it. Half-life bearly runs, it's just really choppy though. Any advice on how to make it run any faster?

No good.
Sounds like my old computer that I got like 7 years ago. It had an AMD K6-2 and a 4 gig harddrive. At that time I put a Voodoo3 graphics card and 128 megs of ram into it, and it helped but not much.
It's just a word processor now, and it's hooked up to my stereo. A big mp3 player is all it's good for.

It's a heap of crap. Throw it out. The power supply is probably only 250W so can't even support the latest gen of hardware.
Considering how much the arse has fallen out of PC hardware prices lately, you're crazy if you don't just cough up a couple of hundred bucks for something half decent.

Found out today that I have an ATi 3D Rage IIC in it. The video feedback on that thing is almost near dvd quality which is just amazing that it runs on such an old computer. But when playing games, it's very slow. Any way to get maximum performace out of it cause I if the video on its great, shouldn't the graphics be too.
Also the motherboard is an ASUS P5-A Super Socket 7 Baby AT.

You have been told how to get best performance. Turn it into a linux firewall and buy something decent.

that would make a DAMN FINE windows 2000 box for super nintendo, nintendo and gameboy emulators. that's what you call a HTPC right there. get a good soundcard in there and a DVD rom drive.
