My LS sits at a dealership awaiting a $1600 repair.
Both sides of the V8 have raw oil in combustion chambers. Seals, gaskets, coils to be replaced. Car has only 84K miles with such serious engine problems.
Can someone tell me if it is possible for a bad coil(s) which may have caused misfires experienced for the passed 3 months caused this type of damage?

I would really like to know because I brought the car in with this misfire behavior a month earlier and the mechanic reset few codes in computer and never fixed the problem in the first place.

What seals are they replacing? It could be that you have $100.00 worth of seals and gaskets that caused $50.00 worth of coil damage and that is what they are replacing. Oil constantly pouring down your spark plugs from a bad seal could get to the combustion chamber if a plug is worked loose.

The damage might not actually be that serious, even though the dealer might be charging a serious price.

Not having complete information can really change a story around. I would get DETAILS on EXACTLY what they are replacing. I think if you had real engine damage, the dealer would be charging more like $4000. I ran into someone at a local dealer that had an LS so I asked him what the car was in for. He told me that he was quoted about $1600 like you, but he didn't want to pay it. After looking at his paperwork I saw that it was repair work that most home mechanics could tackle for under $150.00. He was able to work it out on his own. I am not bashing dealerships by any means. They need to make a fair amount of money to survive.

Good luck.

Repairs include the following:

o-ring
valve cover gaskets
12 oil seals
8 coil packs
8 spark plugs

It really upsets me to see all this money being dumped into a car which I am still paying for.

Does $1600 for the above including labor a reasonable price?

BTW.

Thanks for the responses!

I am going to say that the 12 oil seals are the 8 spark plug wells and the 2 on each side for the bolts that go in the center of the valve covers. This repair is very common for the v8 LSs. I am not going to say what is a good price, or if you should do it yourself, but I personally didn't pay $1600. I have about $250 in the repair, but I did it myself. I would have had over $100 less in the fix, but I found a crack in one of my covers, so I opted to replace it.

I am not sure what o-ring they speak of...maybe the one for the fuel line that they have to disconnect. These cars aren't the easiest things to work on and it did take me several hours to complete the job, due to tight spots where I had to keep switching tools to find the right combination. Others have done it quicker than I have.

You probably don't have 8 bad coils, but if you have the money to throw at replacing all of them, or don't have much time, at least you won't have to troubleshoot which ones are bad. The price for each coil goes for $35.00 to $55.00. I replaced one, but it took me a couple of tries before I found the one that was actually bad.

I threw this page together so someone like you could at least look at it and see what it takes to get the job done.

btw, I bought mine used and had to do this repair within the 1st week I owned it. Didn't even make the 1st payment!! :) I read around and figured I would have to do this fix though, as the car did mis-fire once while test driving it.

You can find a better set of documentation that what ttbit has provided. You owe to yourself to under take this challenge.

If the dealer is trying to charge you 1600 dollars then they are basically trying to bill you 17 hours of labor at 80 dollars plus 200 in parts.

Do yourself a favor buy a few hand tools, print his web page and PM me with your email and I will send you some documentation that will help out as well.

Do this from home or friends house that has an internet connection that way you can pop in and ask the professional DIYers question if you get in a pickle.

You can actually get a Ford service manual CD off of ebay also. I would have put more of that info on there, but didn't want to copy text that I wasn't granted permission for. The job is really pretty straight-forward and I did it with no documentation, so hopefully that will help motivate you.

el es, if you have some good info to add to that page, I would gladly add it and I am sure people would appreciate it. I wasn't able to find any documentation out there, but maybe I just missed it. I do not belong to any "pay for" sites at this time, which may host a lot of information also.
