92 passat trans help

My passat no longer shifts it started out as feeling like someone was kicking my car as I shifted as well as I lost my 4th gear..next couple of days i lost all shifting except reverse which I have to be on almost no incline and kinda put my foot on the gas a bit for it to move in R..I am wondering if i should replace my transmission or perhaps there are other possible problems at hand...and if i most likely do need to replace my transmission ? I am haveing problems obtaining the part my local auto wrecking yards say there are multiple types depending on production date ..I am wondering if there is perhaps a site where I can look up exact part into based on vin# ..I just purchased this car though i have feel in love with it ..and want to get it running quickly....thank you..

The codes are pretty simple. You may or may not need it, if so it's a three letter code (it should be APE followed by a serial number) stamped on the transmission. Try this site:
