Questioning the T-bird!

My girlfriend owns a 1991 2door T-bird and I was wondering if these cars are safe and reliable. It has a 3.8 in it with a 3 speed tranny. it has around 140,000miles on it and I'm just kinda worried about her, I know it has some worn sway bar bushings but I'll soon replace them. My dad owns a gawd dern deathtrap 96 ford windstar, and that was my reason 4 concern was a few past experiences with FORD, i'm not gonna even start in on that piece of shit but yall can read my threads on the windstar forum and see perfectly why i'm worried for her safety. I'll put it short the van never was abused, always taken care of, and has caused a shitload of wrecks and has even put my father in the hospital thankx to FORD suspension parts, it has less than 130,000 miles on it. and I was really wondering if these T-Birds have any of the same problems that their windstar counterparts had, if so the T-Bird has to go. but any reply's would be appreciated.

Given the same accident I had but been in a lesser car, I think I would've been eating a steering wheel. I go thumbs up on tbird safety.

from my personal experience, as long as you know how the car's been treated and take care of it accordingly, it will run well and handle well for a long time. Im pushing 130,000 on my 90 LX, and it still handles like a car with only 30,000 miles on it. As far as accidents, like flewthecoupe said, any lesser car would hurt you more than an accident in a bird will. Theres a lot of steel surrounding you in a car like a thunderbird. Safety is a big yes in a bird.

Ya its definately safe, i rear ended some girl going 50 mph...my front end was destroyed, completely destroyed her back end ('03 Sebring) but i came out of it with only a bruise on my hand...a+ for safety. It's a hefty car that can take a lot of damage and still keep you safe.

I give it an A+ too... The only car i feel safe in is my tbird... prolly never own anything else

how are her driving habits? If she steers like a madman, and drives really crazy then there might be a problem as far as steering components. Anyway, one day I went shopping and filled my WHOLE trunk up with plates, glass and stuff for my new apartment. On my way home coming down from a bridge.... some guy hit doing about 40-50MPH.... I felt nothing but a big smack. I then ran out to see what hell he caused to my car...and wasn't anything but a small cracked bumper and paint that just washed right off. As for all the plates and stuff in my trunk - nothing was broken.

He was driving an '04 Honda Civic and ohhh man.... as reliable as they can be, I wouldn't want to be in an accident with one. His hood was bent all the way up to the windshield and the bumper was totaled. Hows that for safety!

I know Ford parts wear out alot more than some foriegn cars but the Thunderbirds are really heavy and could safe your life in an accident.

Rear drive T-Birds and Crown Vics seem to hold up pretty well. It could be because their previous owners were older and took better care of them. The seem to have normal wear and tear issues, but nothing abnormal.
