i realized recently that the underbody rust along the bottom sides of my car is a lot worse than i thought.

http://electricant.net/misc (see 'rust' pictures)

i asked around and got conflicting advice about how bad this was. word is this is a load bearing structure. folks whose escorts have rusted out- how long do i have on the clock before this is going to come back to bite me?

and what should i do about it?

I have seen worst (nova's) but I would get too it as soon as you can. Would be best if you could weld some new metal in the rust place. If you cant do the repair your best to leave it to a pro. however would proberly be best at that point for a newer car

If you dont mind looking at, I would'nt worry about it. it's not like it's gonna fall apart while driving down the road. I have a buddy with a 91 that has much more rust, it's still get's him from point a to b.

that actually was my first thought- take a grinder to it. back it up to decent metal, and weld on a bar of steel or something similar.

i was thinking i could just borrow a MIG box and do it in an afternoon, but folks seemed to think it was a waste of time. not sure if this was becuase the rust is so extensive that ill likely have to grind half my car off to get to good metal, or whether they dont think its worth the effort.

anyways, what is the concensus on the best thing to do to stop the current rust in its tracks?

thanks,
anthony
