Losing breath in upper rpms

My friend has a b18b1 crx, and I've got the the a1. We run about dead even. My car when you drive it feels a hell of a lot faster than his.
It seems as if I have a lot more torque and no power in the upper rpms. His motor is opposite. His low end feels slow as crap, but his will pull strong to 7grand, my low end is nice, but it stops pulling before 6 grand.
Any ideas on why my car looses breath in the upper rpms?

Hey luke, I believe its due to the manifold and head partially. The a1 only supplies 130hp and thats more low end. The limiter is like 6800 i think?? The manifold is also fairly restrictive. Is your friend running a pr4 or did he convert to obd1 and go with a p70? That also could be another reason.

So you think I might be better off with your head and manifold? (that's what I'm hoping)

I believe the heads are of the same casting, but its the cams and manifold that are different.

Anyway to find out for sure? 'cause I'll just buy cams and intake then...

what year is you engine from?90-91 0r 92-93 cause the 92-93 have 140 not 130 like the 90-91. i believe the difference is in the cams.

lol everyone is like "i think" "i believe"
i wonder if there is a way i could find out for sure before i do anything drastic.

go look up the heads on honda-tech!
hybrid1990crx says "im almost 100% sure that the difference in heads is just the cams and manifold".
oh, and by the way, honduhcivic was hybrid. haha, he told me to tell everyone.

well duh how many newbies start of flaming derek's car? Sorry derek!!
Im not sure if the head will make a difference, but didnt you say you were going to port it? but i know the manifold will! One way to tell the year of a head is on the cast above the header there are little circles with slashes in them, check that out.

gee that wasnt obvious the way he was acting
i called that out in a thread and he pm'd me saying
"Don't make any false acusations of who I am. I don't want to be grouped with either of those too. I've been folowing the forums for awhile now and just recently registered. I'm from Honda-tech. I also saw that in the word thread, on page 1, you did the same thing to silentchamber that him and hybrid1990crx did to you. So I have took it into my own hands to report you since silentchamber obviously can't at the moment."
blah blah blah, like i give a shit, please make friends with my ignore list :evillol:

yea actually, let me know what the head looks like. DUH i have a 90 b18a1 sitting in my garage! i can just look on that and see if its the same lol :)
get pics up of all the casting markings :)

The casting is a PR4 which is a 90-93 teg also. So the head should be the same because the 90-93 had a crappy manifold. ahh im confused!

hmm

no the intake manifold you can CLEARLY see its different and less restrictive.
hmm do i have any pics though?

I'm confused!!! It doesn't seem that the intake manifold would be restrictive. it looks fat and stuff. =P
What do you want me to take a pic of?
I just wanna know if it's going to be worth it to get the head, or just get the intake manifold and different cams or WTF i need to do.

if u have a tig welder, what u can do is cut the intake manifold in half and port the whole thing out and polish it inside, u'll get MUCH better flow then, and then just port and polish the head as well, prolly be better to just do that man
and bore the throttle body some too

the 94+ b18b has many differences that give it that extra 12 HP than a 90-91 b18a.
It has a better intake manifold that has 2mm larger-in-diameter runners and Throttle body, slightly better cams (P75), and it has a better designed 4-2-1 header style exhaust manifold...as opposed to the 4-1 cast manifold style similar to that on an 88-91 civic/crx. Not to mention it is an OBD1 motor so it has a better ecu and fuel/ignition tuning.
The 92-93 B18 motor is the same as the 94+ except for the head/cams....which are PR4. The 94+ cams (P75) are 2 HP better than the 90-93 cams....which is why there is a 2hp difference between the 92-93 and the 94+ B18's.
90-91=130 hp
92-93=140 hp
94+=142 hp
As for why your friend seems to have a better top end....it's because he does. His B18b just has a better overall designed head with the cams, IM, and EM.
As for why it seems that your car takes off faster, that could be millions of reasons...tires, tuning, mods, transmission, clutch, etc.
Also, your car could possibly be lighter than his which gives you the better take off.
i wouldn't recommend changing your head to a newer style. It's not worth the parts/labor cost of doing it.
I would recommend however to change out your Intake manifold to a newer 92+.
The 90-91 intake manifold is plain garbage. Also, if you don't have a header yet, i would suggest changing to the newer oem integra style (4-2-1).
Hope this has all helped.
BTW, to tell what year your engine is, look on the head above your exhaust manifold and there will be a circle with a slash through it that will have the year there. I can't quite make it out in that picture.

Ok well, I think I'll just upgrade the intake manifold 'cause mine all screwy anyway, plus I'll probably have a turbo setup soon to take care of the power loss in the high rpms =)
So what year is this? (don't mind the header rust) btw obviously i do have a 4-1 dc header.

by the looks of the valve cover it might be a 94+ motor, my 90 b18a1 has a valve cover that looks like my dohc zc (kinda has squares on it i guess u can say)... also, i know b20s have that style valve cover as well.(same as urs) so me thinks u have a newer motor
quiXilver

nope, that valve cover is off of a newer motor. the one that's supposed to be on there is one like you said.

what coulor were the plugs on the dizzy. if it is round and clear it is 90-91 if it is grey and square it is 92-93and how many wires on the o2 sensor. the 90-91 has 1 and the 92-93 has 4. i know cause i converted mine from obd1 to obd0.

01-23-2005, 05:59 AM
yeah the 130hp b18a makes power earlier than the 142hp b18b so thats why yours feels faster down lower. and since the 130hp setup is restrictive thats why you start to lose power up top and he still has power because hes breathing better
anthony90si
01-23-2005, 07:54 AM
yup so if you have 1 wire o2 sensor it is obd0 and that mean that it is a 90-91, unless the engine was converted from obd1 to obd0.

hmm, now i'm starting to think its a 90-91 motor

It's still hard to tell. It's a bad pic. It will say it in that first circle with a slash in it on the left. It will say either 9/0 or 9/1 or 9/2 etc....that's the year of the motor.
9/0= 90 etc.

just find a b18b and get the complete head and intake then swap all the shit around to use it on your motor
the newer ones make more power from a few things and the complete head and int mani will help your motor out

DONT do this! its not necessary....lol
all that work/time/and money for what?
less than 5 HP? by switching the head...you'll gain 2HP and maybe 2-3 for the Intake Manifold. It's not even necessary to switch the whole head....just the cams...lol.
