I have a 1996 suburban 4x4 4l80e tranny . I put it into 4 wheel drive and it worked fine. When disengaging it to 2 wheel drive i got a grinding/meshing sound when i stop and then accerate it make a noise from sounds like my tranfer case i have disconnected my front solinoid at my front diff the sound is still there was wondering if there is an ajustment for the transfer case chain or if it is something else? No noise when in 4 wheel drive.

on the transfer case there is 2 plugs a low 1 for draining and a mid level 1 for fluid check and fill. Remove the mid level plug and see how much fluid is in it. The fluid should be level with the open hole.

i checked the fluid it full. It sounds like the right diff isn't diengaging ? auto hubs shift on the fly so i guess I might need to pull the front diff?

it is or seems to be the diff from what i can see or hear the transfer case is working i was listening today and it seems like the diff isn't unlocked on the right side. i don't know if i need to open the front diff their is a quick fix to unlock the diffs tried disconnecting the solinoid for high and low gear thought it would disengage it but didn't do anything so i am thinking that it may need to come apart? i also only use the 4x4 once a yr so maybe it's sticking engaged or the spider gear is stuck. it seems to be when i am stopped and then i accerate or when i turn right it loads up. sorry to confuse u but i had a better look today.

Remove the front actuator from the diff and see if its working, pushing and pulling all the way in and out. It sounds like the actuator is not pulling the slide locking fork all the way out and that is the grinding noise you hear.
