will a 20 degree change in weather make a diff in starting?? the other day it was 40 degrees and started relatively easy. today was 20 degrees and a no go.
have a 1984 chev p/up, changed starter, fuel pump, dist cap, coil, rotor, and plugs. now am looking at the carb. why the no start in a 20 degree weather diff. am perplexed. no problems last year, same conditions. could use some insight
got a q-jet w/auto choke on an '84 non computerized carb. if i kind of flood it, it stumbles and quits, yet sometimes wil start.

Try this:
1. Get in and turn the key to start for 2-3 seconds
2. Pump the gas pedal all the way to the floor 5-6 times, on the last pump, turn the key to start and crank for about 5 seconds, holding the pedal to the floor during the cranking period.
3. Try #2 at least 10 times, give the starter enough time to cool down between cranking
Works in my 86 350 quadrajet every time, even when it was around 0 degrees in the morning, it would start fine. I even have 15W-40 oil in it.

J-Ri,
thanks for the tip, sometimes it will sputter and die. the i do what you suggest and IF it decides to try and start, it will sputter and brownish smoke comes out of the exhaust. maybe the carb is bad, but runs well once i get it started and running. no miss or hesitation

Your choke does just basically what it says... Chokes the engine from getting enough air. So fuel is being added with restricted air. It's only purpose is to start easier when its COLD.
