This site is by far the most informative ive seen yet, thanks alot guys! I just had my blower get all screwy on my 98 grand prix. The first 2 settings havent worked for a few weeks, and this morning It was still running after I turned it off, no matter what it was set too(1-5) is was blowing max... so I had to pull the fuse temporarliy untill i can fix it. by reading the posts by BigL, I guess I have to change out one or both. But I'm having trouble finding these items online. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great! Which one to try first? Also, I live In CT,and its 0-10 degrees now, how much would it cost to get these fixed by a mechanic? is it worth paying the extra so I dont have to go thru the hassle in the cold? Thanks in advance...

From what I can tell, labor rate on replacing the blower resistor at the most would be 2.0 hr's.Since you need it fixed,id just try and pick one up local from NAPA or any parts store that carry's Standard Motor Products part # RU60 and find a good shop to replace that part for you.But id start with the resistor first,it should take care of your problem

If setting 5 isnt working, thats when it's time to replace the Ignition harness.

Good places to buy parts online are www.rockauto.com or www.gmpartsdirect.com

so the blower motor resistor is definately whats causing it to still run while the car is off?? Setting 5 still works, just the first 2 dont. I was driving to work today with the heat set on 3, when all of the sudden I heard it start blowing really hard, like on the 5. when I changed settings off thru 5, it still blew at max...even when I got to work and the keys were in my hand...thats when I pulled the fuse. I dont know the electrical side of my GP at all, so I willtake your word for it... I just want to know what to buy.

Is there a seperate heater/blower relay that is not in the electrical center under the hood? Is there one around the firewall or close to the resistor? It would make the most sense to me, I know there are seperate relays for every speed of the fan, even for the full power one. It would just make the most sense if the relay was stuck pegged wide open, that could be why it still runs when the car is off and only stops when the Hi-Air fuse is pulled...

I would just like to understand this as much as I can before I take it in tomorrow morning. I would think it couldn't be only the resistor, because if there is no power supplied to it, it couldnt stay on when the car is off. I dunno, this whole thing is giving me a headache... :(

On the way way tonight at 1am during one of chicago's blizzards, my 3rd and 4th setting now dont work. I am just left with my 5th setting that works fine, but the other settings do nothing. How much would it cost to get this fixed? and or buy the parts for me to fix myself? can i do this or must i go to a mechanic?

Guys, trust what Big-L is telling you. The blower motor resistor is your problem and needs to be replaced. I had the same problem on my 97 and once replaced it worked fine ever since. You can buy the parts from GM or NAPA it costs between $25 and $40 depending on where you buy it. You can change it yourself although it is up under the dash on the passenger side and is a little hard to get to. I recommend you remove the passenger seat as it gives you more room to work.

I have a 1999 GP SE w/3.1 L V6. My blower motor and resistor pack have blown out 4 times. The first one went at 50K. I replaced the blower with a new one from the dealer. It cost about $140 and the resistor pack was like $26. Then at 100K, that one went out. Now I get an aftermarket blower from Murray's auto parts for $75 with a lifetime warranty. That one went after 22K miles, but since it had a warranty I just brought it back and they replaced it for free. I have gotten use to the job of replacing it. Takes me only about 1/2 hr to do. I still get the resistor pack at the dealer because the parts stores around me dont have it. Luckily the switch hasnt gone yet.

Good Luck,

Cj

My blower works fine, it's just the settings. At the moment i don't get any screeching noises or anything, the 5th setting runs fine.

Better hurry and replace the Blower Motor resistor before it starts to affect the ignition harness.

Wait, it will start affecting it? How about if i don't use my blower? Will that prevent it or will it die because of it anyways?
