FBI puts out alert about possible terrorists

BOSTON — The FBI notified law enforcement officials Wednesday to be on the lookout for four Chinese nationals described as possible terror suspects who may be headed to the Boston area.

Federal law enforcement officials said they had received a tip about an unspecified threat against Boston, and released photographs of the two men and two women they were seeking. Authorities said none of the names had been on previous watch lists of terror suspects.

The investigation stirred a frenzy of media reports and prompted Gov. Mitt Romney, who had gone to Washington to attend Thursday's presidential inauguration, to decide to return to Massachusetts later Wednesday.

Romney cautioned that the threats were unsubstantiated and uncorroborated.

"We have had threats in the past. We take them seriously, even when they're not corroborated," he said.

Romney said the state's threat level would not be raised, but more people would be on duty in the state's emergency management bunker outside Boston.

"To assure the people of Boston and Massachusetts that it is safe to be at home, I am going to be sleeping in my bed in Massachusetts tonight and I feel perfectly safe doing so," Romney said.

"In the very remote circumstance that my attention is needed, I will be able to respond on an immediate basis."

A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter remains under investigation, told The Associated Press that the FBI's joint terrorism task force has not yet corroborated a tip that the suspects entered the United States through Mexico in recent days, possibly bound for Boston.

The official stressed the tip is one of many from around the country that routinely are forwarded to local task forces for further investigation.

Brian Roehrkasse, spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, said the agency was working with the FBI and intelligence officials to investigate the situation. Roehrkasse said he was not aware of any stepped-up federal security measures in Boston, such as extra patrols or measures taken at Logan International.

"Basically, what you have here is information that we often get," FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said.

In a joint statement issued by Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and Kenneth Kaiser, an agent in charge of the Boston FBI office, the suspects were identified as: Zengrong Lin, Wen Quin Zheng, Xiujin Chen, Guozhi Lin.

It's a shame that our elections are choices between the lesser of two evils; I believe that is why they are so close.

I agree with a comment from another thread that it's a shame that in a country of over 250 million people, there are only 2 candidates for the highest office.

Actually if you think about it, US elections and the way it's run seems far less like a democracy. They let the states elect, not the people.

The saddest thing is the admission even three years after 9/11 that his officials still see air traffic as such a security hazard that Junior needs a no-fly zone to keep him safe...You'd think with all the ridiculous and petty regulations spread through the aviation industry, Bush could at least demonstrate a little faith in his own legislation....

Umm you do know that its the USSS who is in control of the inauguration and not the president right Naki? The USSS agents are payed to be the most nervous people on earth so all of the police was necessary in there eyes. I thought it was remarkable that he got out of his limo, even if it was only at the end of the drive.

If I were them,I'd be nervous too.There have been many assassination attemps on Presidents, 4 of them successful. Almost all of them were perpetrated by Americans. The Secret Service has a hard enough job protecting him from his own countrymen[Republican Guard,anyone?] without the President standing up and making the kind of assclown pronouncements[Bring 'em on,anyone?] that guarantee hatred towards him.

They were prevented from exercising their right to free speech, and those that objected were beaten and teargassed.

Naki, yes I am aware who they ultimately answer to, as probably everyone in the nation does, however they do have a large say in what the President does, to the point of being able to restrict his movement and are free to act against what he wants.

Canada has a better constructed government than the states IMO. At least our ministers stay in check with what the people want. Yea, yea, impeachment, but how hard is it for that process to go through?
