Cold start problems?

My bird has a little problem. Every morning that its been cold, she's started right up on the first crank, only just slightly more sluggish than a normal temp day. Well, it snowed last night, and this morning she wouldn't fire up. When I turned the key, the starter would run, and the engine would almost fire up, but would fall back at the last second and the starter would continue turning over. Do you think it has something to do with the snow, or the cold, or do I have a nastier problem?

How fast is it turning?, Cause battery's easily get more run down on colder days and require more energy to crank the starter. I would assume it is just weather related but could be time for a tune up if it hasn't been done in a while. Good Luck.

Went out to try it again. same deal as before, wouldn't turn over. This time, though, I pumped the gas and held it after it tried to start, and she fired up. But, as soon as I let off the gas, she died. Not stalled, or hesitated, just died. Repeated the last step and this time when it started, I ran her high and hard, kept the rpm's at about 5000 for a minute, and let her go, this time, she idled right where she was supposed to, and when I shut it off, it started right back up, just like there was never a problem. Now, when I was running it hard, the exhaust was smelling especially nasty...any thoughts here?

When you say wouldn't turn over, Do you mean that the starter is clicking but not cranking the engine?. Also the nasty smell your talking about I am sure is built up fuel that has created a rich condition and higher emissions. Its caused by you turning the key and pulsing the injector's but not starting the car causing fuel to enter the intake and flooding the engine. The reason why it would start with the gas pressed is do to the fact that your opening the butterfly's(TB) to allow air to enter to compensate for the extra fuel.

Sorry, should have said it wouldnt' fire up, not turn over, the starter sounds fine.

OK well if it has correct voltage and its turning over like normal. I would check your fuel pressure and make sure your getting a spark. When was the last time you tuned her up?. Also after she starts I would let her run for a extended amount of time to burn off any excess fuel. Then if the problems goes away and everything else checks out might have kust been a rough start followed by flooding.

Sounds similar to mine now that the cold weather and snow have hit particularly hard. What you have done so far sounds good though. Just make sure you give it enough time warming up before you take off or you will face some stalls down the road. I think the CPU is supposed to rev the engine particularly hard until you reach the operating temperature. At least that's what mine seems to do. It will rev all by itself until it gets close to temp, then it eases itself down.

Well, took her downstate to my folks' place, and for the first hour the interior reeked of exhaust, but after that, it cleared out and everything seems to be running a-ok. Guess we'll see what happens tomorrow morning :p

Hey I live in wisconsin and its been getting down below 0 a couple of days. What I do is i take a little ether and spray it on a rag. then have someone hold the rag over your intake and that engine will start right up. Some people will be shocked by this but honestly its really not that hard on an engine as long as you dont use too much.
