well i was on my way to work. driving casually as usual when im off to work. coming from behind i see a black coupe. but i didnt get a good look. he changes lanes and pulls up next to me. im doin about 45. he runs beside me for about maybe 15 secs waitin for the car in front of him to move. all of a sudden he takes off. it didnt even seem like he was trying. before i even had time to react he cuts in front of me and jets away. i didnt get a look at the trim but i saw in the corner the feared AMG badging. im like good it woulda been a waste of my gas to even bother haha. although im curious to see how badly i woulda lost

I'm sorry, but AMG>///M in my book. Sure they might call an M5 the ultimate sports sedan but I personally would take an E55 AMG over it any day.

Yeah, but I look at it this way-It tokk MB A supercharger or a V12TT to do what BMW did with a NA 5.0. Sure, its a V10, but still, no FI whatsoever. And have you ever driven a Benz? Things have more body roll than a fat chick at a rave.

But I agree with you...no M car can run in the 11s bone stock like the SL65 AMG can.

indeed cassiesman, was going to point that out also.
It's pretty obvious and normal that that couldn't happen and it's a bit stupid to compare them in the first place.
Plus, look at topgear, the mercedes still doesn't have the service you would need with cars like that.
lol, i just read yr first reply in here cassiesman and i want too furfill it with what my buddies called my benz back in the days. They called it the "TANK" who was made out of "Sollid rocks" to look like a "Brick".
And really, thats how they look, and handled! And I know it's a big difference between the two last generations, but still....
And before you guys start to talk about us being bimmer guys and all.
It has nothing to do with that, it's just my opinion when i compare them to eachother (the 2 brands, not the cars they spoke about earlier).
and too the man of cassie. It's actually a little odd but i noticed our mind often thinks the same way with these sort of things. I wonder it's due to the fact we ride with a car wich has the same whiteblue emblem. :lol2: :lol2:

Ahhh but cassiesman, you are commiting the cardinal sin of "but if I spent 'x' amount of dollars on this car, it could beat that car"....I have no doubt in my mind that dado's 540hp turbo M3 could beat the SL65...but hey, take the SL65 to a kleeman or brabus tuning firm, and we are right back where we started. I was talking stock for stock here.

01-20-2005, 05:53 PM
So what? BMW doesn't use FI, MB does...doesn't mean MB is any "lesser" of a manufacturer than BMW...personally I'd rather have the E55 than the M5(yes, the 2006 one) because the 5 series is butt ugly, thanks to Chris Bangle.
CassiesMan
01-20-2005, 06:34 PM
The new BMWs look fine, and they look better than any MB has ever looked. I'm not saying tis a better car becuase they dont use FI, I'm saying they have better engineers than MB becuase MB needs FI to get numbers that are marginally better than the BMW numbers at best.

I prefer AMG>///M. I just like the styling of benz cars. Bimmers don't lack there, and to most look better, but I like the benz cars. As far as the numbers go, who cares? this tread has no point, and we will never own any of those cars :disappoin

Welcome to the first thread jacking of 2005. I'm not partial to BMW or Mercedes. But from a technical point of view; I'm sure they can pull close to the same numbers of BMW out of a Mercedes if they decided to put in high comp pistons and aggressive cams. Its not a question of who engineered their cars better, because it would be ignorant to call any of their engineers stupid. Because for sure they are not. It was just a question of whether or not the engineers wanted to use low comp and boost, or high comp and flow. Its not that MB NEEDS forced induction to make power, because they could've easily gone the n/a route th at same power themselves. It was simply a choice by their engineers. And this is not to take away from BMW at all, because they could've just as easily gone the FI route themselves. It was all just simple choices.

i do not own an mb e55 or a bmw m5, but i did own a very nice 1996 mercedes c36 amg. that generation of cars did body roll a little more than a comparable bimmer, and i don't think it was up to the level of the e36 m3. i leased an e36 after i sold the mercedes.
i did recently testdrove a c55 benz, and a e46 m3 (for fun...not going to buy either of those for a while). the c55 (this model is NA) had great torque, and it clearly had the advantage if the m3 wasn't on boil. the m3 was a MONSTER from about 6000 to 8000. after driving it, i now know that 6000-8000 is the magic rpm range for the bimmer in that, that is where its lack of toque (compared to the mb) is compensated for. i agree with cassie that the bimmer has the advantage up top.
moving to the e55 vs. m5 issue. i think that the e55's engine, and the bmw's engine are pretty much even in both accelerative terms and quality/sophistication. the mercedes is using a large v8 w/a supercharger to make 469 ADVERTISED hp. the m5 uses a smaller NA v-10 in order to reach its ADVERTISED hp figure of 500. The benz may use a blower, but the bmw has a bigger engine. the bmw has more horsepower, but the benz has waay more torque. some might consider the NA bimmer to be superior, but the e55's engine matches the m5's engine every step of the way. in fact, the e55's eninge won the Best International Engine of the Year award in 2003.
http://www.ukintpress.com/engineoftheyear/bestperf.html
yet, i still think that the bmw MIGHT (and that is a veeeery big might) be faster because of it's weight advantage and its 7-speed box vs. he benz's 5-speed.

best international engine (toyota prius):
http://www.ukintpress.com/engineoftheyear/winners/winner.html
best performance engine (mb cl65, s65): http://www.ukintpress.com/engineoftheyear/winners/bestperf.html
best 2 liter to 2.5 liter enigne (bmw 325i, x3, 525i, z4):

best 3 to 4 liter enigne (bmw m3):

bmw fans shouldn't be dissapointed. two wins are nothing to sneeze at, but the mb somehow managed to win the best performance engine award even thought they CHEAT!!! (being sarcastic).
the 2.5 liter bmw engine is a sweetheart, and so is the m3 engine. i think that they are two of the most refined NA engines in the world (it seems the judges share this belief also).

Oh yeah and one more thing...the turbos on those Benz engines are DETUNED and producing that much horsepower...if they wrung the living daylights out of their engines like how BMW does, using high compression, high RPM hunks of metal, it would be different...the Benz way just happens to be using low compression engines with DETUNED turbochargers that are capable of making MUCH MORE horsepower than the PALTRY 604 hp that the TT V12 in the 65 series AMG cars are making.
