'89 Cavvy performance mods?

Not suprisingly, my Cavalier has double-digit horsepower most likely. I mean, the thing is sloooow. I put a hood scoop on the car, but I haven't made it functional yet - I was wondering, would it be better to make the hood scoop functional, or just to replace the old rubber tube with a stainless steel one and stick a cone at the end for some more horsepower? Also are there any other things a guy could do to up the HP?

This is a 2.0 in line four cylinder with 88 hp. It has a fixed ratio throttle body with no MASS airflow sensor. If you improve the airflow you will just make it run lean. The only input for air pressure on this car is the MAP sensor, it will not change the fuel flow enough to keep up. Sorry but this engine really cannot be modified in a cost effective manner. I know-I own one.

Also, what about those little resistors that you can find on like ebay that supposedly boost HP by 15-20? Looks like a little resistor to me that you stick in the IAT sensor (?) anyone know anything about those? I think I saw a thread about it a while back; didn't sound like they were getting too much praise.

you are not going to find/ going to be able to do anything to that car, that resistor thing isnt going to do shit dont wast your money, your best bet is a whole new car or a small shot of nitro.

XD Yeah I did! The thing is, I put lots of things on that cavvy, some of which include an entirely blue touch-up paint paint job because all the paint was faded, fake chrome rims and gas cap, home-made projector lookin' headlights, some sort of euro style taillights (also chrome) and so yeah I'm just doing a bunch of stuff to it... people think it's hilarious... oh and last night I spraypainted on racing stripes. I have some pictures at www.geocities.com/sircanegiem/cavvy1.jpg and for all the others, just change the URL to cavvy2, cavvy3, cavvy4, or cavvy5. =D

If you removed the throttle body and got say a Weber twin 40 carb and stuck that on you motor you could increase power and then you could do some stuff. Fair amount of work and gas mileage would decrease probably!

There is not enough lift/duration on the cam to pull these carbs. Any gain would be very modest. Perhaps you could do this then add a forced induction (super or turbo). Otherwise all you would do is reduce vacuum and create problems with your power brakes. This cam is VERY weak and does not pull any excess vacuum with the stock system.

Not for speed without a TON of money. To make this thing somewhat fast you would need to modify or replace everything but the block. I have a 1989 and a 1994. The 94 is much quicker 88hp vs 150?hp. To do this small hp increase it has a roller cam/lifters, different intake manifold, multi port injection, a knock sensor for timming and the OBDII, and a smoother intake snorkle. If 60 hp could be gotten for less I am sure GM would have done it the cheaper way. This seems like a lot of trouble for 60 hp.

Perhaps the 94 is more than 150hp. I have never seen it rated anywhere, but a friend told me this and it seemed about right. But the 89 model is rated in one of my books at 88hp. The really sad part is that the 94 gets MUCH better gas mileage.
