Replacement for the Quad 4

My daughter's 1989 Skylark has a 2.3L Quad 4 engine that has a blown head gasket. I've been hearing how these engines are suspect to blown head gaskets, and I'm wondering should I go ahead and replace the head gasket or just install a better engine? That particular year also came with a 2.5L and a 3.3L V6. I have the skill to do these repairs myself, but I need more info on these engines and any other suitable swaps. Thanks Butch
