2000 Civic SE noise when disengaging clutch

Hoping someone can shed some light on this problem before I bring the vehicle into a shop. I'd rather go in with some idea of what it might be.
This Honda makes a noise while disengaging the clutch in lower gears and in reverse. Specifically, the noise occurs the moment my foot leaves the clutch pedal.
I would describe the sound as similar to what you might hear when starting a car that is already running (the grind the starter gear makes against the flywheel). Another way to describe it might be like running a metal nail across a metal cheese grater. The duration of the sound is approximately one second and then it disappears until changing gears again and releasing the clutch pedal.
This only occurs when shifting into or out of reverse and 1st, or when shifting into 2nd.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
