Cam Suggestions??

I have an 85 C10 2 wheel drive, auto trans. It has a stock 350 with about 40k miles on it. I want to add a cam and I'm not sure how big to go. I don't want to have to add a stall, but I want it to hit a lick and help with performance. A friend has a 280 lift comp, but someone told me that would be too big. Let me know what you suggest.
Thanks

Well, I put a larger cam in my 350, and although I have a manual transmission, the cam would hold up in an auto w/out a stall.
Mine is a hydraulic flat-tappet with:
204/214 degrees of duration at .050 tappet lift
278/288 advertised duration
.420/.442 lift w/1.5 rockers
Now, 280 degrees of duration may sound like a lot, but as a present standard, I would base your decision on the .050 duration numbers.
A good rule of thumb to avoid a stall convertor would be to stay below the 220 degree area. (At .050) Also, the more lift you can get, the more power you will get, but more lift also equals more duration, so it is somewhat of a catch twenty-two.
Hope this helps.
