New year, New Z06 to play with.
Let me start off the story with this disclaimer. I was dead tired when I got home from work. Driving from Long Beach to San Deigo (109.4 miles one way) to work at a marina on a customers boat and then home again. With afternoon traffic wears on you.
So, it being unseasonably warm (high 70s today, if not touching 80) as well. I started cat-napping on the reclining sofa in the living room when I get a call to come hang out and eat chiliburgers and be fat and happy.
Being all groggy and generally confused as to what I'm doing I make the trek to the 76 gas station to top off the Z and then onto the freeway.
Cruisin down local street that is stupidly long and has great areas for racing... and has several rich areas that branch from it. You see lots of nice cars. Those of you who remember, I had a run in with a Z06 before. It was on this stretch.
I check my rearview, I see a car coming up in the right lane. I'm in the left lane. I wonder what it is. I determine it's not worth my effort to race. When all of a sudden, a Corvette comes up the middle lane.
"Oh, now this is worth messing with"
A Black on Black Z06 with blacked out wheels and proudly sporting that 405hp badge on the fender comes skirting by. Window half rolled down and I notice a blonde pony tail sitting in the pilot seat.
"Oh baby, gimme some."
I downshift to 4th and start to come along side when she downshifts and takes off on me.
"Oh you little tease!"
I take chase, she's not getting to far. At this point I figure she's not going all out. She doesn't have any reason to believe I'm any threat. Why would she? It's only a Datsun. :naughty:
Fate has a funny way of working... I'll explain why.
Light ahead goes red.
I'm in the left lane, she's in the middle. I'm revving it up to keep it from dieing (stupid Idle), she's revving back.
This is the first time I've launched the car with the new clutch/flywheel setup. Sooo I wasn't sure what to expect.
Light goes green, The Z stumbles and bogs out slightly but recovers beautifully and She comes off the line hard roastin tires.
I hit 2nd gear way too hard and break traction, she and I are neck and neck... I reach for 3rd gear.... and....
MMMMMIIISSSHHIIIFFFTTT
"wtf... whats that sound... why am I on the limitor... why'd I stop accelerating?.... OH SHIT I TOTALLY MISSED 3rd GEAR...ACKK"
I stomp the clutch and toss her into 3rd and dump the clutch and get back on it...
"GO YOU LITTLE JAP BASTARD GO!" I cursed to my car as she crept away.
She let off slightly, but got back on it when she realised I wasn't going down that easy. Top of 3rd came, I shifted into 4th and started reeling her in like the prize fish she was.
Light up ahead changes to red.
"Ok girl, I fucked up... Lemme have one last chance."
She kinda waves me past, I think. She made some hand gesture out the window. Her lane was blocked up ahead. So she tucked in behind me at the light.
I'm revving it up again to keep it from dieing... fucking idle! She's back there, I can't hear her revving over myself. But this time I'm going for broke.
Light goes green, I come off the line hard. I think I can come off the line a bit faster/harder but this was damn near perfect. She's stuck on my rear bumper.
Her and I clear the intersection together in a 700hp frieght train of pure sexy racing goodness. Before any other car was through the first crosswalk.
I nail 2nd gear with only the slightest of chirps... she's clearly still in my rearview mirror. Maybe 6ft off my rear bumper.
I hit 3rd gear so goddamn hard... now I start to hope... I hope I can keep her back there. This is after all a Z06.... winding out 3rd.. we go into 4th gear.... check the mirror again...
"She's starting to fall back... wait. The lights are getting farther? Slowly.... wait... I'm faster?.... I'm FASTER!... GO BABY GO!"
I'm well past the century mark on the speedo... and I see her let off the gas maybe 2 very short car lenghts behind me.
Then I see her drop back insanely fast... and hop into a left turn lane that takes you into a neighborhood.
I let off, and coast.. apply the brakes slowly... downshifting smoothly.
I come to the next light, last light before I turn. The Z stalls out. I'm shaking from both exhaustion and adrenaline.
"Holyshit." I look around to see if anybody was watching. Which was stupid, if they were it'd be about a half mile back. I pull into the parking lot where my buddies are at and I sit and let the car idle down on the turbo timer.
I got out and I had to lean against my buddies Titan for a few cause I was drained. You know it's a good race when it puckers up your asshole and gets you shakin afterwards.
More shit happened tonight too, but I'll make another post about that...

assuming 15% loss with the stick shift, you prolly have bout 297hp, and a tad more torque...
hp/lb... = 297/2355 = 0.12611 hp/lb...
That is assuming your turbo didn't add any weight to the stock rated curb weight of the car...
now Z06, rated to 405hp, prolly a tad more in actuality, but we will calculate with 405hp...
hp/lb... = 405/3116 (from autotrader) = 0.12997 hp/lb...
as you can see, the hp/lbs if VERY close, suggesting that it would be a drivers race... however, the z06 has FAR superior suspension and probably a better gear box than the 240z...
I could see you matching the z06 and keeping it at your rear bumper, but pulling cars on it, especially up top end where the LS6 loves to run... I'm just not buying it... :nono:

your theory is quit close, but i must add that the all aluminum 2.0 SR20DET is around 200 lbs lighter then the all iron 2.6 liter L30 straight six. so thqt would put redneck dangeriously close to being 2000 lbs flat. so in that case, the power to weight would be in favor of redneck
also most rear wheel drive don't have 15% drive train lose, its closer to 18%.
S2000 makes 240hp it puts down 200whp, a 350Z makes 287hp, it puts down around 235whp. get the picture?
so given that also, it will further boost rednecks power to weight. making 252whp on a nissan 5 speed is around exactly 300hp or just a hair more.
now back to the subject, redneck are you sure it was a girl and not some feminine dude with a pony tail?

I have seen many of rednecks posts, and you are correct, I've never seen him BS before, but I just happen to think that this was exaggerated a little... Even though it wasn't a side by side race, alteast now you know about what to expect from a Z06 for your next run in with one (provided its not had a cam swap--and if you get one that does, you'll know, lol--but again, maybe this one did).
Sounds like that girl could work that 6-spd. pretty good.

I have no clue why project_speed got all butt-hurt about Red posting his story...I also, as many of you have already made clear, don't agree with the paper racing theory, there are just too many variables on the street that could swing either direction for either car...this shouldn't be a "who's car is faster" board, that's not the point. We are just objectively posting our experiences...hell I'll use an example that I posted a ways back...I posted a story about how I "kept up with a C5 vette through the twisties"...everyone immediately called BS on me...then I posted more details...the guy was grey haired, maybe a little past middle aged, so maybe his reflexes and/or driving skill were past their prime...the C5 was also a convertible, which would take away from the structural rigitidy of the chassis...the C5 was bone stock and I have aftermarket sport springs that make my car handle better...I knew he was actually TRYING because his back end was twitching out of the medium-speed corners every time and throwing up gravel and small pieces of asphalt up onto my windshield...it was also the road I lived on, so I knew the road very well, as I had been driving the road twice a day(or more) for the last 5 years....now that I've added in the details, doesn't my story make more sense? I know this was a long post to try to make a single point...the point is, once you hit the road, all "paper racing" takes a back seat to the real world. Ok I'm done.

For all of those who stick up for me. Thanks, but it's not needed. I can answer all of his questions.
First off, Yes I have a Nissan SR20DET motor swapped into my '72 240z. That includes the Silvia 5 speed the comes with it, so the clunky ass Z speed I had before no lives in my buddies Z.
Anywho, so that answers if my tranny can handle the SR20. Indeed, the misshift was totally my fault (indeed I was tired from work but it's still my fault). I ain't perfect. Even pro-racers misshifts, although probably not as bad as I did. :lol:
Ok onto weight reduction.
Stock S30 240z weighs in like you said. Around 2350lbs. That's with the iron block L24 2.4L Inline 6 motor and a rather beefy old school 4 speed tranny. Beefy meaning fat and heavy, not nessicarily strong.
When I got my SR20DET, it came in on a palet. With the transmission, driveshaft, ECU, Harness, Intake, Exhaust manifold + turbo, all the smog equiptment and some random frass that was tossed out. All said and done, the shipping form read that it all weighed 400lbs on that palet.
The L24 itself weighs just over that by itself in long block form. I know you know what that means. But for those of you who don't that means with out manifolds and goodies attached.
So I dropped around, 200-250lbs with the help an All-aluminum motor four cylinder. Now, off the motor I ditched the Powersteering pump, the a/c compressor and the clutch/fan assembly. That all weighed around 40lbs.
In the interior, I've stripped out the rear. Meaning no full size sparetire, I had two jacks in the car, and the carpetting was removed. Along with the heater box, blower box and ducting. That all together was around 60lbs. (the heater box was stupidly heavy!)
~200 + 40 + 60 = ~300lbs
Now, the car should be sitting around 2100lbs... and about 2300lbs with me in the car and a full tank of fuel. Like I was lastnight.
Now, you mentioned suspenion and the Z06. Ah yes, here's the funny little thing that happened to my Z when I did the swap. Before said swap, it handled fairly good. I have only Tokico lowering springs, thats the extent of my suspension mods for now. With all the weight of the Inline 6, the car was a bit nose heavy and fairly balanced. Now, cause of the lightweight SR20 sitting just aft of the front cross member. It's incredibly light in the nose, especially when you goose the living piss outta the poor girl.
This, as any drag racer knows. With a light nose it throws the nose up, and sends all the weight to the rear. I have a 3.90 gear ratio R200 open diff (for now), with all the weight being thrown to the rear. It actually hooks up fairly well for being 'stock suspension'. It handles like a goddamn buick in the twisties now cause it has no weight to preload the suspension. But it's hell comin off the line... well as good as just about any 'street' drivin car.
And that chick knew how to drive, I was highly impressed.
I can't think of anything else to say on the subject at the moment... but I hope I've made some sense for you. If you've got any more questions/comments please ask Project_Speed duder.

Yeah, that's all fine untill your front tires start leaving the ground, lol. An inch or two is acceptable, if not desired, but anything above 6 or 8 inches makes the first 60 ft a little "radical" to drive.

Alot of the times you can change your rear end grease and solve that problem (I'm assuming LSD means limited slip differential).
My dad's truck has somethign similar (its GMs version of a locking differential-one tires pulls under normal conditions, but when one slips, they both pull up untill a certain wheel speed) and his just quit pulling all together one day. Changed the rear end grease and now it works just as its supposed to (its a 91 model, so its got some age on it as well, not 30 years, but you get my drift).
