automatic transmission won't change 98 4x4

I have a 98 4x4 silverado 350 extended cab. Sometimes when driving my vehicle it starts off in high gear and does not change, so it makes it very difficult to start off -- this is very difficult because I live in a mountainous terrain.

This doesn't happen all the time -- somtimes the tranny works fine. It's very strange. Also, sometimes I can shut off the vehicle, restart it and it will work fine. I do live in a cold climate 0 to 40 degress in winter months. This just started happening over last week - I also had a remote starter installed, however I am assuming this would have nothing to do with it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks...

Does your PRNDL display stay lit up when the truck doesn't shift? IS the SES light on? Does it happen only when using the remote start?

OH YEAH. The remote start could be the problem. You have a 2nd ignition wire that needs to be energised during RS. If not, something with the tranny goes nuts and ruins the whole thing.

Yes, I've noticed that it only happens with the remote start. I can turn the engine off after the remote start has warmed up the truck, then wait about 10 seconds and restart and the tranny works like it should. Very strange.

The RS that I have is an Ultra Start 12xx/13xx. Do you know which 2nd ignition wire your talking about that needs to be energized?

Yep, you have 2 wires. One is Pink and the other is White.

Well, that seemed to cure the problem. Since both wires have been connected the tranny is now working fine. It shifts from low to high, instead of just starting out in high gear - I was wasting a lot of fuel and putting alot of strain on my truck.

Thanks for the advice.
