My Wife has had great luck with hers. Problems have been power windows slow when cold, Drivers visor plastic broke, Spare Tire rack sometimes difficult to latch.
Electronic ignition went out at 30,000 miles but warranty work covered and service was quick.
Timing belt went out last week as you can see from my earlier post, but it should have been changed at 60,000.
100,000 mile warranty is almost gone from hers but we have had no other problems. She loves it. Tough as a tank. Only gets about 22 mpg. I thought that was goofy, my Aroura gets 27 on the highway, but she wont trade it. I have been after her to trade for a new Kia but she wont budge.
Good Luck

consider the condition of the vehicle and the parts availability.
We have a 2002 w/ 22k on it and so far no major problems.
The biggest problem is the nearest dealer is 100 miles away and if a breakdown occurs, they will tow the vehicle the 100 miles to fix it which is kind of rediculous.
They are great vehicles but considering parts, dealer locations and resale value, next time we'll probably buy elsewhere.

INdeed I get more mileage from my Pontiac Transport than from the KIA, but anyway, driving it is fun.
Timing belt must be done at 70,000 miles
Front hubs (vacuum) will need replacement for sure but you can do it yourself..not difficult. I'm not even sure they still work..are you? ...MOre info on that just posted on this forum or ask for more.
Others have complained that moisture sucked in by vacuum hubs ruin the front bearings..but I'm not sure what depth they had gone through in that mud pond.....and if they had used widely offset rims..some do the weirdest things with that truck....
ahh......$4000 is not expensive....! and the truck is rock solid.
AHH...check in cold weather with full defroster on for any smell of antifreeze: changing the heater core difficulty level is 12 on a scale of 10.

Check for oil leaks around valve cover gasket. For the 1996, oil leaks can led to cyclinder misfire.

I had a scarry experence with a sportage. Last thursday i had a soccer game in St. Augisten. So my parents stoped by jacksonvill on their way to my game to look at an '02 kia sportage. they thought it was nice, no problems at all.
saturday we drive over there for me to look at it. When we cranked it up there was a horrible belt squeak. we determined it was the A/C clutch. then we test drove it, there was a horible electrical noise coming. almost like an alarm that had been shorted out. we also kept hearing a relay click inside the dash. once you got up to a decent speed (over 50mph) then came to a stop you where overwhelmed with gas fumes. for this thing to be such a POS an deteriate in that short ammount of time, i had no intrest in buying it. I never liked kia and now i deffanitly will never own a kia. we bought a Mazda B3000 that day (ford ranger with mazda badges pretty much. consumer reports best used car buy). I love my Mazda...
but anyway, persoanally i would not reccmend one.
on top of thoes problems the sportage has poorly designed cup holders, its hard to explain but you will understand once you test drive it.
